Your Humble Handicapper made a tidy profit in the EPL last season, but he has already started planning his 2014-15 season predictions. The way to win big money in the EPL at this stage is to look at the gossip, and transfer rumours, and then win money accordingly.
Looking at the odds on the most shiny of prizes (the English Premiere League trophy), we see that Man City are EPL favourites at 15/8 followed by Chelsea at 23/10 and Man Utd are third at 6/1.
Enough with the Big Three…WHERE’S THE MONEY, MIKE?
After the roller coaster that was the 2013-14 season, the Premier League big boys are prepared to part with some severe cash this summer, and the most reliable bit of gossip I’ve heard is that Iker Casillas of Real Madrid, will be turning out between the sticks for the EPL’s special club Chelsea.
Staying in defence, my spies tell me that Toulouse’ right-back Serge Aurier, who was voted into Ligue’s team of the Year last term (after his six goals and six assists) is heading to the Emirates. He’s off to the World Cup with the Ivory Coast first, but will likely be arriving at Arsenal after his trip to Brazil.
Arsenal are 10/1 to win the EPL trophy (that’s 5th favourite with the bookies); they're certainly worth a bet, but they are also 4/5 to finish in the top four, like they always do.
Louis van Gaal signed a three-year contract, and has been tasked with reviving United's fortunes after their disappointing seventh-place finish. The Dutchman will reportedly be given a £200m war chest after their season from hell. Man United need to make some big changes, and have allocated Matt Hummels from Borussia Dortmund as their number one target. He’s needed to fit the departing duo, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.
The "almost-made-it" team that are Liverpool FC have reportedly made a cash-plus-player offer to Europa League winners, Sevilla, for Alberto Moreno. Whispers over in Spain say it’s Suso, and £16.2m for the 21-year-old left back. The defender is said to have a £24.4m release clause in his current contract, so Liverpool may have to swell their coffers with some big name sales.
Elsewhere, Brendan Rodgers may have to lock horns with Arsene Wenger over goal-scoring Olympiakos’ 25-year-old sensation Konstantinos Mitroglou. Don’t forget that Le Professor is seriously considering signing Luis Suarez. The Gunner's boss said, "I think that every defender in England hates playing against him. He has a strong, provocative personality.”
Liverpool are still fourth favourites at 13/2 to win the league, but Luis Suarez is the bookies favourite to be the EPL’s topscorer, whoever he plays for.
Elsewhere, Real Madrid midfielder, and Arsenal transfer target, Angel Di Maria, rubbished reports linking the Argentine with a move to Tottenham Hotspur: “It hurts when you’re always doing your best for your club, and then you hear that you might be going to Tottenham,” Di Maria was quoted as saying.
