Let’s take a look at who is in contention for Group C and what are they likely to do. First off we have the mighty Paris Saint Germain, who booked their place in the group stages by coming top of the French top flight. Then we have Portugal’s Benifa who silver medalled their way into the Champions League.
Greek side Olympiakos may have won their league over in the land of olives and philosophy but they will find this group tougher going. Finally bringing up the rear, literally we have Anderlecht, the Belgian professional football club based in Brussels. Anderlecht plays in the Belgian Pro League (and as we all know the most successful Belgian football team in European competitions (with 5 trophies)).
Enough about who we have…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
PSG are 18/1 to win the Champions while, the odds rocket for their table mates. Benfica are as high as 100/1 for our soccer picks to win the tournament (although they also run as low as 66/1). Olympiakos are around the 250/1 mark and Anderlecht are 500/1, although (not that it matters) Stan James have them at 1000/1.
Le Pick De Jour
The French side are the bookies pick to go through top, at 4/6 but Benfica are close behind at 9/4. As with a great many Champions League Groups, Group C is very much a group of two halves. I’ve already mentioned the two top teams (oddswise) but making up the numbers is the Greek Colossuses of Olympiakos, who are 19/1 long shots to top the group and Anderlecht who are the true underdogs at 25/1 betting odds.
It’s no surprise that PSG are foregone conclusions to qualify at 1/12, while Benfica re expected to finish second (and 2/5 to qualify) while The Greeks are third fancied (aka lining up for the Europa League) and Anderlecht won’t even get BFH. If you fancy a cheeky bet go for Olympiakos to finish bottom at 1/5. Why? Just because something odd always happens in the Champions League.
There will be some hard fought matches in this group – but I doubt we’ll see an upset as the Champions League progresses to the knock out stages.
However if you’re feeling all Greek why not back Olympiakos to qualify but make sure you back them to beat PSG in their home opener on 17th September, as if they are going to do the former, they might just do the latter. A home win is at 16/5, while an away win is at Evens (nb: a draw is at 13/5, also worth a sneaky couple of quid).
Soccer Prediction: PSG come out on top and Benfica qualify.
