The champions of Ukraine and Germany meet up on Tuesday night after their exciting 2-2 draw in the first leg with the German side sitting pretty in pole position with two away goals.
Borussia Dortmund may have come out on top in just two of their last six games in all competitions, but as the Champions League looks to be their only chance of silverware this season I doubt they’ll take their collective eyes of the metaphorical ball on against Shakhtar. The overall Champions League winners odds tell you plenty for who to back in this match, Dortmund are 7/1 and 4th favourites while Shakhtar are 66/1 and the third least fancies side to do it.
Looking at the other Champions League odds
The hosts are 5/19 to reach the semi-finals while the visitors are 79/16, and if you want to bet on either of these sides reaching the Champions League final you should know that Dortmund are 3/1 and Shakhtar are 33/1, which tells you plenty about who’s going to come out on top in this match.
Enough with the long term betting…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
In this immediate match the sportsbooks have a clear favourite as they have a home win 8/13 an away win at 9/2 and a draw at 3/1. You should also know that any away win will see the visitors through, while only 2-2 will see Extra Time played, and possibly the dreaded penalty shootout. Because of Dortmund’s away goals Shakhtar would need to score three goals to go through on a draw and 3-3 is offered up at the highly unlikely soccer odds of 45/1.
Looking at the bigger picture
Borussia Dortmund are one of just four unbeaten teams left in the Champions League. Last time the sites may have been a little over two weeks ago but Borussia Dortmund have played four games since then while Borussia Dortmund had a chance to put the food up.
Your Humble Handicapper can’t see any reason not to bet on the home side are going through. Borussia Dortmund have conceded just two goals in the last four games and I can't see them letting 3 in this close to victory. Shakhtar Donetsk by comparison and only scored two goals in their last two games but scored five back in November.
Looking at Shakhtar Donetsk's recent form is a little bit misleading as there's very little recent action to go on. But for the record in their last five games they have clocked up 11 goals (all Champions League matches) but have conceded nine. Borussia Dortmund by compression have scored 10 goals in their last five games and conceded just four.
