This Wednesday sees the German heavyweights host the Spanish giants in what promises to be a thrilling semi-final first leg clash of the Champions League. These sides don't have a great deal of recent history playing head to head and things are reasonably even, looking at their last three games, in the last couple of years against one another, with each side having one win and a draw.
First things first Real Madrid are 2/5 to qualify for the Champions League final and Dortmund are 7/4. Looking little further ahead, soccer odds have Madrid at 2/1 and Dortmund at 13/2 on the lifting the Champions League trophy. However before we talk about winning the Champions League there is the little matter of this semi-final match.
It's interesting to note that the Bundesliga giants have only beaten Real Madrid (in European competitions) once in six attempts, with three draws and two defeats. However, that was the last time they played them at Signal-Iduna-Park, Dortmund. The game ended 2-1 and that score is available at 9/1, while any German victory is at 9/5. The bookies have the shortest correct score odds on Dortmund winning at the aforementioned 2-1, while the shortest correct score odds on a Madrid victory are also 2-1 at 8/1. The shortest correct score odds are 1-1 at 6/1 but I think we'll see more goals than that.
Dortmund have the slightly more impressive run of late there on a four game winning run and are undefeated in the last five, Real Madrid also won four of their last five games but there is a defeat right middle of it. Looking at goalscoring Borussia Dortmund have scored 15 goals in their last four games while Madrid have scored 14 in their last four, and 17 in their last five.
Many sportsbooks have Madrid winning both halves and 3/1 while the German outfit doing the same is at 4/1 and the game being drawn at the 45 and 90 is 5/1.
Before you rush down the bookies to invest in a Madrid victory, know that Madrid haven't beaten Dortmund since August 2009 when the game ended 5-0, albeit in a friendly.
Your Humble Handicapper does think that Madrid will go through to the next round but he doesn't necessarily think that it will be plain sailing. Dortmund are a tough side and aren’t in the competition just making up the numbers. However I do think that Madrid have a little bit more European class and Champions League pedigree.
