Borussia Dortmund hot faves

Borussia Dortmund are the bookmakers’ favourites for their tilt with Hertha BSC on Saturday. Installed as the -275 favourites at Bet365, bookies are clearly cornering this game in their camp. But Dortmund have taken the foot off the pedal in domestic action lately, plagued with injuries and key suspensions, the Black and Yellow have just one win in their last five home and away games with a 1-1-3 record, a run of form that sees them drift 12 points behind league leaders Bayern Munich.

So the obvious question that must be asked: does Dortmund warrant such heavy favouritism across all online sportsbook platforms or are the bookies overrating them?

Borussia Dortmund are currently third in the table on the back of a 10-2-4 record this season and 32 points. At home they are 6-0-2 this season, a record that includes 21 goals scored and 8 conceded.

Since a resounding 6-1 victory over Stuttgart, Borussia have gone on to a 2-1 defeat at Wolfsburg and, crucially, lost both matches at home against title rivals Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen – not that it makes much of a difference in the overarching Bundesliga betting markets that sees Bayern Munich tipped as the runaway favourites for the title at -5000 soccer odds. (By contrast, both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are quintessential long shot bets at +2800 and +3300 respectively.) The only win Dortmund have managed during this worrisome spate was a 3-1 win over Mainz 05 and, most recently, they are flush off a 2-2 draw to Hoffenheim on the away.

Certainly, Borussia Dortmund will be looking to bounce back when they take on Hertha BSC at Signal-Iduna Park on Saturday where – rather auspiciously – they’ve only lost to rival title threats this season. That against the rest of the Bundesliga field Dortmund are undefeated augurs well for this upcoming clash. Of course, that can change on a dime on any given weekend and Hertha BSC is not a side that can be taken lightly, despite the +650 soccer odds currently trading at Bet365. After all they really took it to Bayern Munich earlier this season and only narrowly lost.

But Dortmund are showing positive signs: they do seem to be on the up following a successful qualifying campaign in Champions League action, which saw them clinch top spot in their group over Arsenal. And they are enjoying an enduring run in DFP as well.

What’s more third in the league is not a bad position at all. Given the tough schedule they’ve had to bear over the past few weeks with pivotal matches across all competitions. Now the schedule is considerably lighter moving forward, lesser opposition strewn along the way presents an opportunity to capitalise on as they attempt to bounce back and close the gap on Bayern Munich.

Hertha BSC are currently seventh in the table on the back of a 7-4-5 mark and 25 points. They are just two points adrift of sixth-place Schalke 04 and four points shy of fifth-place Wolfsburg.  Eighth-place Augsburg are nipping at their heels just two points away.

Hertha are unbeaten in their last three home and away games, a run of form that includes a two-game winning streak on the road – a 2-0 win over Eintracht Braunschweig and 3-2 win over Werder Bremen. It’s worth mentioning however that these wins mark their first wins on their travels this season and both came against two of the league’s bottom stragglers. Overall, they are 2-3-2 on the road with 11 goals scored and 11 conceded. Finally winning on the road is definitely a positive that sends Hertha BSC into their clash with optimism but it remains to be seen whether they can parlay wins over bottom sides such as Braunschweig and Bremen into a win over a top club of Borussia’s ilk.

Soccer Betting Verdict: By all accounts this is a home banker and, thus, Borussia Dortmund at -275 soccer odds seems to be the correct soccer pick. To add value to that take the Over 2.5 at -225 as well as Dortmund to win both halves at -120 because Dortmund have loads of attacking potential that can outmuscle and outplay Hertha’s backline.

Soccer Picks: Borussia Dortmund to win outright at -275; Over 2.5 at -225 and Dortmund to win both halves at -120
