The UEFA Europa League enters its Knockout Phase in the next two weeks, so what better time than now to see how the 32 clubs left got here, talk about some Future and individual Game odds, and make a couple of picks.
How’d They Get Here?
In the ‘What is the UEFA Europa League All About?’ piece here at Sportsbook Review, we provided an in-depth look at this tournament and who gets to play. The specific Qualification process all leads up to this coming Knockout Stage—the phase in this UEFA Europa League which begins on Thursday, Feb. 19 when play resumes next week—can be confusing but the 32 teams now left playing are the aforementioned 12 winners and the 12 runners-up from the Group Stage (just like the Champions League) along with 8 Third-Place teams from the UEFA Champions League Group Stage—Olympiacos, Liverpool, Zenit St. Petersburg, Anderlecht, AS Roma, Ajax, Sporting Lisbon and Athletic Bilbao (Athletic Club). So, in the Group Stage, the UEFA Europa League is basically pared down from 48 teams to its present 32—the 12 First Place Group winners and the 12 Runners-Up along with those aforementioned 8 Third-Place teams from the Champions League Group Stage. The Knockout Phase ends up being a wonderful mix of survivors and teams who are mad after being bounced from the big tournament.

Trying to make some money on the UEFA Europa League’s Knockout Stage would probably be a bit easier than trying to scratch out some winners of the UEFA Champion League same phase of its tournament, which just has 16 teams left and some rathering unappealing matchups for such a late point in this renowned European tourney. Three of the last five winners in this tournament have come from Spain’s powerful La Liga, with aforementioned Sevilla having won it once and upstart Atlético Madrid having won it twice (2009/10, 2011/12) in that five-year span, so, backing Sevilla (16/1, Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook) and the two other members of this muscular league—Villarreal (16/1) and maybe even Athletic Bilbao (25/1)— with your soccer picks seem like a wise idea from this distance. This tournament has had a certain pattern over the last several years and if it holds true, at least one of these teams should at least be in the UEFA Europa League final will be held on Wednesday, May 27 at National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland (ITV (UK), 20:45 CET/2:45 p.m. ET/11:45 a.m. PT).
