The 2013-14 Premier League season was one of the closest in recent memory, but it ended in a somewhat predictable manner, we all know that clubs from Manchester (United and City), have won six of the past seven titles; and Chelsea are the only club to break into the top one with a win by one point over United in 2009-10.
Your Humble Handicapper as soon as the 2013-14 campaign concluded, took a look at the transfer market to see which players are going to play for what clubs the following season and has already decided who will finish in a top four (aka the hallowed Champions League positions).
Enough with the bru-ha-ha…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
It’s worth stating that the season ended with City on top, followed by Liverpool in second place (two points behind) Chelsea were third, two points behind Liverpool, and Arsenal ended yet another season in the top four (but seven points off the top).
The “nearly made its” were Everton in 5th place and Spurs in 6th on 72 and 69 points respectively.
The longest odds of a top four finish are on promoted Burnley at 1000/1 but do consider that West Brom are also on 500/1. Neither of those things are likely to happen, but you can make some money backing who IS going to finish in the top four if you listen to your Humble Handicapper’s top soccer picks.
The bookies have City as favourites to win the league at 7/4 followed by Chelsea at 9/4 then Man Utd at 5/1 and then Liverpool at 11/2. You could do worse than back all those sides to make up the top four, but when you consider that Liverpool are 7/4 not to finish in the top four and Man Utd are 11/8, you might want to reconsider.
Your Humble Handicapper sees problems for both those sides next season, so will be having a small bet on them failing to record a top four finish. Arsenal are the side that always seems to manage a top four finish, so they are a safe bet at 5/4 with the sports bookies.
Your Humble Handicapper also tells you to avoid backing top half of the table finishers; Newcastle, Stoke and Tottenham to make the top four as they just don’t have the quality. Stoke are 100/1, Newcastle are 50/1 and Spurs are 5/2…but none of my money is going there.
It’s going to be a very recognisable top four this time next year but if you want to back a long shot consider Everton at 4/1 and Southampton at 33/1.
