Saratoga Thoroughbred opens on Thursday and will add to the depth of quality racing. We will have free picks from there and Woodbine on Thursday.

Saratoga Springs, home of the Saratoga horse track, has a rich history. Saratoga Springs was a playground to the rich in the middle 1800s, as a gambler, casino owner, ex-boxing champion, and future congressman John Morrissey organized Saratoga’s first thoroughbred meet a month after the Battle of Gettysburg, in the middle of the Civil War in August of 1863.

Morrissey went to purchase 125 acres of land and as a result, the Saratoga Race Course was born.

We are also revisiting Woodbine, who recently got passed a new Thursday starting time that has bettors excited. Speaking of excited, your local handicapper nailed 30 exact or better winners last week, an eight-week high and added 11 more ticket cashers for horse racing picks. Let’s get after it this week!

Saratoga Race: 3

Post Time: 2:20 EDT
Surface: Dirt Distance: 6 Furlongs

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #5 Palomita

Backstretch News: We start the action on Thursday with a five-horse race and Palomita is the favorite at 9/5, however, this far from secure as the worst horse has opening odds of just 6/1. Palomita is from the C. Brown barn and he’s been running out ticket cashers with regularity.

Palace Avenger had a hot 85 Beyer Speed Figure in the last outing, showing potential stability and is off of a sharp workout. Figure of Speech is also off a fine workout and under Brown.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #5 Palomita 2) #3 Palace Avenger 3) #2 Figure of Speech

Longshot Pick: #4 Glass Ceiling (4-1 odds)

Woodbine Race: 2

Post Time: 3:52 EDT
Surface: Inner Turf Distance: 1 Mile

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #1 Alkeline

Backstretch News: Almost by default, favored Alkeline gets the call and is 3-0-3 (WPS) in 10 starts at Woodbine and not many others are standing out. Desert Poem is 5-2-1 in 11 tries here, yet, we’re spooked enough off of last trip to knock down DP one notch while realizing this could be the winner. Capoeira has comparable speed numbers to the faves, with jockey and trainer not adding to our confidence.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #1 Alkeline 2) #6 Desert Poem 3) #5 Capoeira

Longshot Pick: #4 Soexotic (6-1)

Saratoga Race: 7

Post Time: 4:40 EDT
Surface: Inner Turf Distance: 1 1/16 Miles

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #1 Astoria Kitten

Backstretch News: This has the makings of another hotly-contest race at Saratoga. Those in the field don’t appear to have a great deal of separation, which is why we are drawn to Summer At the Spa, who has shown plenty in two starts and has a realistic chance for improvement that could show today.

Pandamom is in the right barn at the right time with C. Clement, who handles this type well on turf. Astoria Kitten is a worthy favorite, but trainer D. Gargan has been cold of late, which is reason to drop modestly.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #9 Summer At the Spa 2) #8 Pandamom 3) #1 Astoria Kitten

Longshot Pick: #2 Noble Jewel (8-1)

Saratoga Race: 9

Post Time: 5:46 EDT
Surface: Dirt Distance: 1 1/8 Miles

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #6 Mystic Guide

Backstretch News: This is the Grade 3, $100,000 Peter Pan Stakes as the feature and Mystic Guide has horse racing odds of 5/2. This event is usually at Belmont the week after the Kentucky Derby, but not this year and has been moved to this location.

The top four finishers acquire points for the Derby. MG has also shown steady improvement (72-84-89) and might be on the rise with age, still Country Grammer has more appeal. CG has Brown training him, top jockey I. Ortiz Jr., while also getting faster (79-83-87) and offering more consistency. For third its Modernist, who has won two of three at a mile or better.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #2 Country Grammer 2) #6 Mystic Guide 3) #3 Modernist

Longshot Pick: #8 Chestertown (10-1)

Woodbine Race: 6

Post Time: 6:10 EDT
Surface: All Weather Distance: 1 1/16 Mile

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #1 Leonard’s Bay

Backstretch News: For this race, Giant Mine might not be the greatest horse in its class, however, you know what to expect with Beyer’s like this (67-65-67) which gives us confidence for at least an exacta. Night Watchman has the speed to be in a stalking spot down the stretch and will like the added distance. Leonard’s Bay is the choice over #3 based on its trainer having been punching tickets.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #4 Giant Mine 2) #1 Leonard’s Bay 3) #3 Night Watchman

Longshot Pick: #5 Conquest Eliminatr (10-1)

Woodbine Race: 7

Post Time: 6:43 EDT
Surface: Inner Turf Distance: 5 Furlongs

Morning Line Favorite at BetOnline: #6 Reconfigure

Backstretch News: Reconfigure is a chalky 7/5 favorite, based on overall speed and in a short sprint like this, that matters. Behind #6 we’ll choose Western Trouble and this longshot not only has one of the best jockeys here in E. Wilson but also has reliable numbers (83-85-82) that would be important.

Hitters Park was bet down to 4/5 twice at last year’s Woodbine Turf Sprint Series and only managed to finish third and fifth. This is another such race and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for third off a great workout. Could be a sleeper.

Horse Racing Picks: 1) #6 Reconfigure 2) #4 Western Trouble 3) #2 Hitters Park

Longshot Pick: #4 Western Trouble (8-1)

See you back here Friday with more racing, Good Luck!
