This will be the sixth year the Robert Trent Jones course has been used for the Safeway Open. A tight, short parkland course that was re-designed by Johnny Miller in 2014, with Bermuda Fairways undulating between the tree lines and slow Poa Annua Greens.

Safeway Open - September 26-29

Silverado Country Club - Napa, California

Can the favorites be opposed this week?

Yes, this week on the PGA Tour the favorites can be opposed in the betting market.

Justin Thomas is the favorite this week at the Silverado Country Club, having finished the previous season in style with a victory at the BMW Championship. Since the Tour Championship, he has had a cancerous mole removed from his leg and has taken to Instagram to warn people of the dangers of sun damage, advocating for people to get checked themselves. He also said it was “no problem going forward”, and it will not affect his play long term.

Second favorite, Patrick Cantlay, has been impressive thus far in his PGA Tour career and has the look of a future major champion. At present though, it is time to start adding to his tally of two PGA Tour titles which seems a low return for his consistency. This week is a great opportunity to do that but I am happy to oppose him.

Mid Range Betting Tips and Predictions

Last season, two week’s play appeared to define Chez Reavie's season moving him up to a World Ranking inside the top 30. They included an impressive US Open at Pebble Beach 3rd, followed by winning the Travellers Championship. His last start at the Tour Championship backed up that belief with a 5th place finish. He has shown a liking for Silverado Country Club in previous years with four top 33 finishes in five attempts. Chez Reavie has chosen this week to start his new season and has the look of a Banker in the top 20 market.

Korean Sung-Jae Im was close to winning here last year when a final round of 71 left him just one shot behind the three-way playoff. He has started this season fast and in a similar fashion to last year with a couple of good weeks. He can count himself unlucky not to win his first PGA Tour title at the Sanderson Farms Championship last weekend losing in a sudden-death playoff to Sebastian Munoz. I think we can follow him again this week on the place markets.

Nate Lashley was an emotional winner of the Rocket Mortgages Classic in July after overcoming a terrible family tragedy in his early golfing career. His statistics had for a long time been better than his results, therefore the win came as no real surprise. A third-place finish at Greenbrier shows he is still in fine form and we have a top 20 finish last year at Silverado Country Club to show he likes the course.

Double Safeway Open Champion, Brendan Steele, needs to re-establish himself on the PGA Tour after a slump dating back to his 2017 victory here. The Military Tribute at The Greenbrier gave encouragement that an upswing in form was close for Steele after four solid rounds, so it will be interesting to see if he can build on that this week.

A serious change appears to have taken place with Tom Hoge’s golf game from the Barracuda Championship in late July onwards. Three top 10 finishes in his last five events and another good effort at the Sanderson Farms Championship last week bring him to California in his very best form. The previous years on the PGA Tour have been a struggle for the thirty-year-old from North Carolina, but his form here has been respectable.

Recommended Bets

BANKER - Chez Reavie – Top 20 @ +175 at BetOnline

PICK – Sung Jae Im – Top 20 @ +110 at BetOnline

PICK – Nate Lashley – Top 20 @ +350 at BetOnline

Longshots

Korean/American Kevin Na is a solid bet this week in California. He has twice finished in the top 7 at Silverado Country Club. A player who is blossoming with experience and becoming comfortable winning tournaments, he had the perfect preparation in his last start at Greenbrier with a top 20 finish to open his account for the season.

Lastly, South African Dylan Frittelli needs a mention as he won the John Deere Classic in July. Last week at Sanderson Farms Championship, he made a promising start to the new season when he recovered from an opening round of 71 to post a 6th place finish. Last season at the Safeway Open he finished 25th on his course debut and so can expect better this time around.

Recommended Bets

LONGSHOT – Kevin Na – Win @ +5000 at BetOnline

LONGSHOT – Dylan Frittelli – Win @ +5000 at BetOnline

PICK – Kevin Na – Top 10 @ +350 at BetOnline

PICK – Dylan Frittelli – Top 10 @ +450 at BetOnline
