Before placing any tennis picks for the US Open Betting Day 3, note that the players from the top half of the draw will be in action for the second round.

On the first day of the second round in the 2015 US Open, we have picked two matches from the men competition as our top tennis picks of the day.

Milos Raonic vs. Fernando Verdasco
Milos Raonic had a recent foot surgery after Wimbledon and is clearly struggling to perform at his best level. After losing in first round of Montreal and Cincinnati the Canadian finally managed to get back to victories against Tim Smyczek 6 – 4 7 – 6 6 – 1, however he keeps struggling with his serve with only 49% first serve in. In last 12 months Milos had an average of 62.6% first serve in but since his return to competition those numbers have decreased to 54.8% and without high % of serve he’s a very vulnerable player.

Fernando Verdasco needed five sets to overcome Tommy Haas, was a match where Fernando should have won it easier but as we see very often he struggles to perform at a consistent level. Verdasco likes to play against big servers, he can return extremelly well to serve and he has always been a tough match-up for Raonic.

They played six times with the h2h 3 – 3, Milos won the three they played on Hard Court and Verdasco the three on clay. However only once Raonic was able to win in straight sets (7 – 6 7 – 6 at San Jose 2011) and Verdasco knows how to create many problems to the Canadian.

The price for Verdasco is the highest ever at +241 and there is a massive overrating of Raonic for this contest. Milos level is very far from his best and Verdasco has pretty good chances to get this contest, the main problem for him should be his head on pressure situations but if Fernando can be consistent he should be able to pull an upset.

Tennis Pick: Fernando Verdasco ML at +225 at BetDSI

Mikhal Kuhushkin vs. Grigor Dimitrov
Grigor Dimitrov had a very good draw and after the loss of Kei Nishikori his chances of reaching semi-final are clearly higher. Grigor wasn’t having a very good summer, but his level has been clearly raising and his performance against Andy Murray in Cincinnati was superb but he wasn’t able to close the match. What was more positive about Dimitrov was his forehand, he plays too passive many times, but against Murray he was just going for his forehand without any fear and when he is more aggressive, he can do a lot of damage with his groundstrokes. Dimitrov had an easy first round against Matthew Ebden defeating the Australian 6 – 4 6 – 2 6 – 4 winning 48% of points on return.

Mikhail Kukushkin first round was a formality because Yen-Hsun Lu was injured in his back and just came to court in order to receive the prize money of first round. Kukushkin started the year with a huge run in Sydney reaching the final but his results on Hard Court since that tournament are very low with a 3 – 6 record. Despite being able to hit high level groundstrokes, Kukushkin needs to be at his best in order to be able to create problems to the top players and he clearly hasn’t been producing his best tennis.

There were two previous meetings with Dimitrov winning on Hard Court and Kukushkin on clay however both matches were in 2012 and Grigor is clearly at higher level currently.

Dimitrov should be able to get a good win against Kukushkin, the Bulgarian has a better serve, can do more from the baseline with his groundstrokes and his backhand slice should also be a good weapon to change the pace. The tennis odds spread line is -6.5 at -111 for Grigor and he has a good match here to cover it, he’s playing very good tennis and there isn’t much Kukushkin can do on this contest.

Tennis Pick: Grigor Dimitrov -6.5 at -111
