It's time to see if Newcastle United's victory against Aston Villa was just a blip on a downward spiral or will they get anything from their home meeting against Chelsea this coming Saturday. Making a pretty penny off the sports books is just be a click away.

Tuesday night saw Newcastle United record that rarest of beasts when they won away from St James's Park, 2-1 against Aston Villa. It was the first away win of the season for the Magpies and it was a massive win in a guaranteed relegation scrap sixpointer. Chelsea can do Newcastle small favour on Wednesday if they can take all three points off Reading, which would give the Geordies a chance to stay ahead of that little club.

Enough with the Geordie joy…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?

The Premier League picks for this clash all point in one direction, and that direction is South, as it looks like all three points will be heading down to London with Chelsea. Newcastle United have faced Chelsea 67 times at home, winning 34, losing 16 and drawing 17 matches in the process. It's no wonder that the sports books have Chelsea win at 4/5, a draw at 11/4 and a Newcastle win at 10/3.

Chelsea have only tasted defeat at Newcastle's feet once in their last 10 meetings, and that was a 2-0 reverse down at Stamford Bridge in May 2012. Mrs Richardson is very keen on Newcastle, and their football club, but not even “she who must be obeyed” thinks it's worth investing in a black-and-white win in this one irrespective of the number of Frenchmen in the side.

The wisdom of wives

The cold hearted pragmatist that she is she also thinks that having a bet on Demba Ba is a smart move. The Premier League odds boards are offering the former Newcastle striker, who now plies his trade for Chelsea, at 4/5 to score at any point and 4/1 to get the first goal of the game against his former club.

The only thing that's really is in Newcastle's favour with this footballing pick is that they still have plenty to play for, as they are far from out of the relegation woods yet. The Geordies have 24 points, and applying my patented rule of six, that puts them a good two points away from being out of danger, from being dragged into relegation scrap. You should know the Newcastle 6/1 to go down this year and there are six teams who the bookies fancy more for the drop, including Aston Villa at 4/6. However I don't think a Newcastle side who have conceded more goals at home than they have scored, that's 16 compared to 14, will fare particularly well against a Chelsea side who have scored 21 goals in seven games on their travels and just conceded 11.

Looking up to winning ways

There may be less of a gap between third-place Chelsea and fourth placed Tottenham, a mere three points, but I can't see Chelsea slipping out of the top four this season. Football cappers agree with me, as the best odds on Chelsea finishing top four this season are 1/9 with bet365. Newcastle may need the win more, but I think Chelsea are a lot more likely to record it.

Another choice to add to your sports picks would be to expect the winner to keep a clean sheet, that’s winning and keeping a clean sheet as in the last three meetings between the sides the winning team has done just that. Looking at the last five head-to-head matchups and it’s two wins for Chelsea one win from Newcastle and a pair of draws, Chelsea have outscored Newcastle eight to 5 and more tellingly the home side has only won once in the last five meetings between these two and that was a Chelsea victory back in August.

Prediction: Chelsea win 2-0 available at 7/1 wit Bet Victor.
