Who will finish higher? Southampton or Tottenham? Who cares? No-one, but we do care about making money, so William Hill's Lee Phelps has stuied the odds for his free betting pick.

You can almost hear the symbols crashing and the drums beating as a high gloss promo blears out from the television telling us this is the “BATTLE FOR SIXTH PLACE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!!” Okay so maybe not, but Southampton take on Tottenham with both aiming for European football next season, for as much as the media decries it, the Europa league, for foreign managers in particular, is a target. Not only does it look good on the CV, but it's also possible route to the Champions League.

Southampton
The Saints season has been punctuated by injury but on the whole it's been a fantastically consistent campaign from Ronald Koeman’s men. I've said many times that whatever the strike force’s problem may have been, the defense has remained rock solid. In fact Southampton still have the second-best home defense in the division behind Chelsea, helped no end by three successive clean sheets at Saint Mary's running up to this game.

This rock solid defense comes up against one of the biggest tests of the season so far: Harry Kane. It's interesting that Southampton haven't conceded a goal from one of the big team’s strikers apart from the two nil defeat to Manchester United when Robin van Persie scored both goals. The other matches have all been midfielders who scored against them, which suggests they can cope with the front man, but maybe the runners from deep are an issue.

Although Southampton don't concede many, they can also be accused of not scoring enough. When you look at the table, it shows 29 goals in the ‘for’ column at home, but it's worth remembering that eight of those came in one match against Sunderland and whilst I am not trying to belittle, soccer odds makers know that it does alter the stat somewhat.

Tottenham
It's hard to know which Tottenham will turn up at the moment. Will it be the one that looked tired against Burnley in that nil draw or will it be the one that went to Saint James’ Park and won 3-1? We should be careful about lauding Tottenham too much after their result in the North-east though, as Newcastle are arguably the worst team in the Premier League at the moment (but their neighbors Sunderland may just pip them to that).

It would be fascinating to see Tottenham in full flow attacking Southampton, but the Saints have such a well-disciplined set up, I can't see Spurs having the energy to break Southampton down. Bearing in mind what I said about midfielders scoring against Southampton it's worth looking at Cristian Eriksson's price to get a goal.

He's scored in both the last appearances against the Saints including the only goal of the game at White Hart Lane earlier in the season plus he's just scored for his team for the first time in a while.

Soccer Picks
I like the draw in this game with both teams cancelling each other out. Southampton’s good defense containing Tottenham’s exciting attack. I can see both teams scoring but I'm not sure I can stretch to a 2-2 draw with my soccer picks.
