Newcastle United Home Underdogs
Newcastle United open the 2015-2016 Premier League season at home, hosting Southampton in Sunday's round of match day 1 action. As it is with the start of anything, there's bound to be excitement and nerves at St. James Park, not to mention optimism for the coming season. If the soccer odds were any indication however that optimism is conspicuously absent on the Premier League odds board.

Odds makers send Newcastle United into match day 1 of Premier League betting as the decided home underdogs, trading at +190 soccer odds to win outright. Obviously, this market outlook is understandable. Newcastle United barely survived in top flight last season. They clinched 15th spot with a 10-9-19 mark and 39 points, putting them just four points above relegation. What's more, they lost nine of their last ten league games overall, four of their last six home fixtures down the stretch, all of which featured top ten sides.

It's a tall order for Newcastle United to take on the Saints on match day 1, even if they have home advantage. Southampton finished seventh in the league with an 18-6-14 mark and 60 points. They also won the last three meetings over Newcastle United by a combined score of 10-1, twice blanking the Magpies en route to a 4-0 win at home. The last two meetings at St. James Park went 1-1 (2013) and 2-1 for the Saints (2014).

Still, Newcastle United have made some interesting offseason moves that could set them up rather favourably in the coming season. Even for this matchup to a certain extent. They picked up Dutch Footballer of the Year Georginio Wijnaldum, who lead PSV Eindhoven last season to the Eredevisie title, amongst several other good signings.

Southampton Played Above Expectations Last Season
After Liverpool plundered their lockerroom and Mauricio Ponchettino left St, Mary's, few held out much hope for the Saints in the 2014-2015 season. Tale told, they played above expectations, even challenged for a Champions League berth before fading down the stretch.

Going into the 2015-2016 season, the Saints have undergone several changes. On the one hand, defence has been bolstered by signing Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina, along with keeper Maarten Stekelenburg. On the offensive side of the ball they have some intriguing up-and-comers to spot, including Sadio Mane who had a promising debut last season with 10 goals.

Overall, Southampton are a well coached side by Ronald Koeman. The Dutchman had big shoes to fill after Mauricio Ponchettino's standout 2013-2014 season and he didn't disappoint. Better. He exceeded expectations as he led the Saints to a top ten finish.

Soccer Betting Verdict
Based on last season, one has to fancy Southampton's chances of coming away with the win at St. James Park. Odds makers may not be cornering the game entirely in their camp with +140 soccer odds. But that only makes the Saints the value soccer pick to win outright in our books.

Soccer Picks: Southampton +140 at Bet365

[/]{"component":"oddswidget", "eventId":, "sportsbooksIds":[43], "LineTypeId":2, "PeriodTypeId":1}[/]
