As Wimbledon moves into the 2nd round, we attempt to spot those matchups that could serve up tennis betting thrills, if not minor upsets. Check where we're putting our money in Day 4 betting markets.
Andreas Seppi -500 vs. Borna Coric +333
Italy's Andreas Seppi takes on Croatia's Borna Coric in the second round, all while a spot in the third round hangs in the balance. Seppi enters this clash as the firm -500 favorite to win outright, but Coric is a tempting +333 underdog. The up-and-comer beat the tennis odds in his round one encounter, coming through as the +250 underdog to defeat Stakhovsky in five sets: 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2, 1-6, 9-7, as recommended on our day 2 tennis picks
Seppi had a straightforward opener against British wild card Brydan Klein. He comes into Wimbledon riding solid form in the lead up to the prestigious event, which should stand him in good stead. In Borna Coric, though, he comes up against one of the ATP Tour's brightest young prospects. Corna put in a lot of effort in his first round match, which could take something out of him for this clash. Then again, he's young. He's shown he has plenty of fight in him and that he can make a fist of it against some of the best. As such, we're not ruling out the mini upset at +333 tennis odds. That said, the safer tennis pick is to back Seppi to win in four or five sets.
Tennis Picks: Seppi at -500 to win
Prop Tennis Picks: Seppi to win 3-1 at +275 or 3-2 +550
Vasek Pospisil +110 vs. Fabio Fognini -150
Canada's Vasek Pospisil looks to advance into the third round at the expense of Fabio Fognini on Thursday. Odds makers roll out a tight tennis betting line with plenty of angles for profit on both sides of the coin, prompting us to consider this matchup on our mini-upset shortlist.
It's the first meeting between this pair, which adds to the intrigue value. Fognini is the seeded player in this matchup; hence, the bookies' favorite at -150. However, going against his favorable tennis odds is a subpar 13-14 record on the season ahead of Wimbledon. Fognini has accounted for some eyebrow raising wins over Nadal in 2015, but he's failed to build on those meaningfully.
Pospisil may also be struggling this season with a 9-12 record ahead of Wimbledon. However, if there were an edge he has over Fognini its surface edge –he is the defending Wimbledon doubles champion (with Jack Sock). Fittingly, he's priced as the nominal +110 underdog.
Indeed, this is one of those clashes that could go either way. For our money, we're tipping it towards the Canadian ever so slightly on our tennis picks at +110.
Tennis Picks: Pospisil +110
Prop Tennis Picks: 3-1 at +450 or 3-2 at +550
Gael Monfils -275 vs. Adrian Mannarino +200
The all-French affair between Monfils and Mannarino should be the popcorn match of the day, if the pair lives up to the billing. Monfils (28 years of age) is one of the most entertaining players to watch, and when he gets going he can play out of this world tennis. Mannarino is a player with lots of upside in his game, playing some of the more consistent tennis of his career at 27 years of age.
Interestingly, it's their first-ever meeting. Without previous head-to-heads to go on, odds makers corner this match in Monfils' camp, simply because he has the ranking edge over his compatriot as well as the better season at 26-11 ahead of Wimbledon. But playing against a compatriot can be tricky at times, especially when you are the player that is expected to win.
For Mannarino a win over Monfils would be significant from a national standpoint. To take the measure of one of France's best in the current crop on the ATP Tour could do a lot for his confidence. He's faced both Tsonga and Gasquet in recent years and come up empty-handed. Third time lucky?
Monfils is 4-2 at the majors this year and he takes a solid 4-2 record on grass having reached the semis in Stuttgart and the quarters in Halle. Still, Monfils can sometimes come out flat. Flunk a match that he should win, which makes him a shaky tennis pick at times. We're going to cast our lot with Monfils, but this could go four or five sets.
Tennis Picks: Monfils -275 to win
Prop Tennis Picks: 3-1 at +275 or 3-2 at +500
