Sebastian Vettel will look to extend his points lead in the F1 Drivers’ Championship race Sunday in his native country. Can Lewis Hamilton or another driver damper Vettel's return home?

The 2018 Formula 1 World Championship season resumes this weekend with the now-biennial German Grand Prix from the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg Motor Circuit in the Rhine Valley with German (Heppenheim) native Sebastian Vettel trying to defend his home turf, make it two straight F1 wins and extend his 8-point lead over defending champion Lewis Hamilton after beating the UK native in the British Grand Prix two weeks ago.

After 10 races, the 31-year-old Vettel (4 Wins, 171 points) is slightly ahead of Hamilton (3 Wins, 163 points) in the Drivers’ Championship with Kimi Räikkönen (116), Daniel Ricciardo (2 wins, 106), Valtteri Bottas (104) and Max Verstappen (win, 93) all still in the picture. There is a big 51-point dropoff between Verstappen in 6th place and Nico Hülkenberg in 7th place (42 points).

Hamilton (-130, 5Dimes) is still the favorite in the futures market to win the Drivers’ Championship with Vettel, who we tabbed here to become the new champ, still priced at a value-laden +140 with longshots Bottas at 40/1, Räikkönen at 70/1, Ricciardo at 145/1 and Verstappen at 155/1. Mercedes (-190) is a rising chalk in the Constructors’ Championship race (3 wins) with Ferrari at +155 and Red Bull Racing-TAG Heuer a longshot at 37/1, so if you believe in Vettel and The Prancing Horse, there is still perceived value to be had.

Here are 2018 Grand Prix of Germany futures numbers from Bovada along with top 10 finish numbers for the 67-lap, 190.414-mile (306.442 kilometer) race which will hold Practice 1 (4:55 a.m. ET, ESPN2) and Practice 2 (8:55 a.m., ESPNU) on Friday; Practice 3 (5:55 a.m., ESPN2) and Qualifying (8:55 a.m., ESPNW) on Saturday; and the race Sunday (9:10 a.m., ESPN).

German GP Winner Futures Odds

(July 17, Bovada)
Lewis Hamilton +135
Sebastian Vettel +165
Valtteri Bottas +750
Max Verstappen 9/1
Kimi Räikkönen 10/1
Daniel Ricciardo 10/1
Fernando Alonso 1000/1
Romain Grosjean 1000/1
Nico Hulkenberg 1000/1
Kevin Magnussen 1000/1
Carlos Sainz Jr. 1000/1
Charles Leclerc 1500/1
Esteban Ocon 1500/1
Sergio Pérez 1500/1
Pierre Gasly 2000/1
Marcus Ericsson 3000/1
Brendon Hartley 3000/1
Stoffel Vandoorne 3000/1
Sergey Sirotkin 5000/1
Lance Stroll 5000/1

German GP Top 10 Finish Futures Odds

Lewis Hamilton -1,000
Sebastian Vettel -1,000
Valtteri Bottas -600
Kimi Räikkönen -500
Max Verstappen -350
Daniel Ricciardo -300
Nico Hulkenberg -275
Carlos Sainz Jr. -275
Fernando Alonso -225
Kevin Magnussen -225
Romain Grosjean -200
Charles Leclerc-200
Esteban Ocon +110
Sergio Pérez +120
Marcus Ericsson +350
Pierre Gasly +350
Stoffel Vandoorne +450
Brendon Hartley +700
Sergey Sirotkin +2,000
Lance Stroll +2,000

Vettel Seems Worth A Shot

With expectations high in the Ferrari (22 wins in German Grand Prix) camp, backing Vettel (5th here in 2016) and his Constructor Ferrari — this season racing in a darker shade of red — to win their 5th race of the season seems worth the shot with the 33-year-old Hamilton (65 career F1 wins) possibly feeling a bit desperate in this spot coming off a loss — off the pole position — in his native England two weeks ago although Mercedes-Benz will probably be in the final mix in its native Germany and Red Bull may be one to watch on this track.

Drivers outside of Vettel and Hamilton — who will likely fight for the pole — who may emerge victorious here include Bottas (+750, Bovada), Ricciardo (10/1), Verstappen (9/1) and maybe even Emmerich am Rhein, Germany native Hülkenberg (1000/1), who, like Vettel, will have a great deal of the crowd attending pulling for him.

[/]{"component":"video", "type":"youtube", "url":"https://www.youtube.com/embed/Afy_2S5GS10", "videoSize":"Large" }[/]

The next race up on the F1 season schedule will be the Hungary Grand Prix on July 29 from the Hungaroring motor race track in Mogyoród, Hungary (outside Budapest), before taking its annual summer break.

Free German Grand Prix Winner Pick: Sebastian Vettel +165 (Bovada)

2018 Emirates German Grand Prix Digital Race Program
