While you are busy watching the Falcons & Packers duke it out on Sunday Night Football, why not cash in off the biggest event that no one will be watching? Our 2017 Emmy Picks are in, and fellas... there is some value to be had!
Sports bettors love September. There’s just something in the air. The kids are back in school… and for those of us still in college, nothing beats a solid back to school party. Not too hot. Not too cold. For the next 30 days your entire closet is fair game.
But back to point here. Sports betting.
Why do sports bettors obsess over September so much? Football right? Wrong!
The EMMYS. Unless you have been loving under a rock, you must be aware that this Sunday night we will all flip the bird to ESPN, and Sunday Night Football? Take a fuckin hike.
Fellas… I’m kidding. Before I drive my masculinity even further into the ground… nothing, and I mean nothing is going to keep me away from my Sunday Night date with Carrie Underwood and Aaron Rodgers.
But does that mean that I am going to pass on the chance to make some money based on all of the Hulu I binged on throughout the offseason. Hell no.
Without further ado, here are my top picks for this year’s Emmys.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Atlanta (FX Networks)+300
Master of None (Netflix)+2500
Modern Family (ABC)+4000
Silicon Valley (HBO)+4000
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix)+5000
It isn't uncommon for a repeat winner in this field, as Modern Family use to dominate, taking home 5 straight. Now Veep is favored to make it three in a row this year, but that almost feels a little to certain for my money.
Im going to step out on a limb here. Atlanta has killed it in it's opening season, winning everything from a Golden Globe, PGA, WGA, to the Critics’ Choice award. We might see Julia Louis-Dreyfus pick up her sixth in a row as Outstanding Lead Actress, but I am going with Atlanta at plus odds here. We have seen enough political comedy play out on the news this year, I could see the vote lean to something new and fresh.
PICK: Atlanta +300
Outstanding Drama Series
Stranger Things (Netflix)+150
This Is Us (NBC)+250
The Handmaid's Tale (Hulu)+350
The Crown (Netflix)+450
Better Call Saul (AMC)+3300
House of Cards (Netflix)+4500
If another person mentions those damn kids to me again...
So I actually watched Stranger Things. All of it... and I am not sold. Sure they are young and cute. Sure they drop cliche expressions that strike up memories of your own childhood, but all in all, I thought it was overrated from the start. An award for Stranger Things would simply be a not to the age of the actors involved.
That leaves the rest of the field.
Better Call Saul? Meh... nice try, but also disappointing. It wasn't until I started writing this article that I realised that I hadn't even finished the second season. That's a bad sign.
House of Cards? Give me the first few seasons over and over and I am all good. However, much like BCS, I am yet to finish the final season, and after binge watching the earlier seasons, the final storyline just did not speak to me as much.
Who am I going with? The Crown.
This could be the first Netflix show to earn a big win, and it's about damn time. Solid acting and storyline, as well as a global appeal. Game of Thrones also helps keep the interest in all of that feudal, royal junk at an all time high. Move over vampires and zombies, Kings and Queens are the new 'In' item this year.
PICK: The Crown +450
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Donald Glover (Atlanta)-300
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)+350
William H. Macy (Shameless)+800
Aziz Ansari (Master of None)+1500
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)+2500
Zach Galifianakis (Baskets)+6600
Lets skip the explanation here... Donald Glover. Lock it in, thank me later.. NEXT
(Side-note.. nod to BIll Simmons for suggesting that Zach G. should have two nominations for playing two characters. Big Zach fan, but no win this year bud)
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep)-600
Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish)+450
Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie)+1400
Allison Janney (Mom)+2800
Pamela Adlon (Better Things)+5500
Jane Fonda (Grace and Frankie)+5500
Ellie Kemper (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt)+4000
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is at the Emmys is like Rafa Nadal on clay courts. Game, set, match. JLD is the runaway favorite here, and for good reason. Looking at the -600 from a betting standpoint should resonate with gamblers the way Mayweather -600 did against McGregor.
It's SOOO obvious that it might actually be too obvious, right? Just ask any sucker who dropped $100 on McGregor.
PICK: JLD (Veep) -600
Outstanding Limited Series
Big Little Lies (HBO)-300
FEUD: Bette and Joan (FX Networks)+300
The Night Of (HBO)+600
Fargo (FX Networks)+3300
Genius (National Geographic)+3300
Living in Costa RIca is great, but one thing that sucks is the TV selection that we have. I was actually really into Big Little Lies, and somehow the programming schedule in this God forsaken paradise caused me to miss the end. To all of you who uploaded full episodes to youtube, ripped them onto torrent sites.. Ya'll the real MVPs.
Big Little Lies is favored here, and lots of pundits are thinking that FEUD should actually be favored here. Sure, but I'm thinking that Fargo could be a real sleeper here. Just ask anyone who remembers the Republican Primary. Sometimes when you have two clear favorites duking it out, room is created for a third option to sneak in a steal the cake.
Look for Ewan McGregor to take home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, and maybe toss a unit on Fargo here as your 'look smarter and more cultured than your friends' move of the night. But please.. do this while hiding that ticket on Big Little Lies in your back pocket.
Good luck tonight...
Now back to football.
