Stan The Man
French Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka takes on child tennis prodigy Richard Gasquet in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, what should be an exhilarating showdown of single-handed backhands.
Wawrinka Match Betting Odds
To win match at -225
To win first set at -188
To win 3-0 at +200
To win 3-1 at +300
To win 3-2 at +500
Their head-to-head is dead even 1-1 with Gasquet winning their first-ever meeting in 2006 in Paris and Wawrinka winning their second meeting at Roland Garros in 2013. Given the quality of both of these players and the longevity of their respective careers it's a wonder they haven't met more than twice at a tournament. Then again, it speaks to their lengthy struggles with consistency.
Wawrinka seems to have nipped that in the bud as he's coming off his second major title victory, but it's too soon to tell on which side of the spectrum Gasquet is on. Having said that he's breezed through Wimbledon to reach the quarterfinals, dropping just one set in four rounds (to Kyrgios). More importantly, he dispatched Grigor Dimitrov (last year's semi-finalist at Wimbledon) in straight sets, beating the tennis odds in the process. Gasquet must be brimming with confidence going into this clash as a result.
Gasquet Match Betting Odds
To win match at +175
To win first set at +138
To win 3-0 at +600
To win 3-1 at +550
To win 3-2 at +650
Wawrinka has had a rather light draw en route to the quarterfinals, which could be a disadvantage. He's faced lightweights and middleweights up to this point. Gasquet promises to be his toughest test yet, particularly on grass where the Frenchman can really turn up the heat with his scorching single-handed backhand.
Tennis Betting Verdict: Stan Wawrinka -225 vs. Richard Gasquet +175
Appropriately, this match is nestled on a tight tennis betting line with Wawrinka matched at -225 tennis odds to win and Gasquet matched at +175 tennis odds. Wawrinka is the sound tennis pick at the moment because Gasquet has yet to prove he's a big occasion player. Still, it won't be a shock if he does beat the tennis odds at +175 and advances into the semis.
It's interesting to note that Wawrinka's odds to win in straight sets are trading above Even money at +300 and increasing the deeper the match goes. On the flipside, Gasquet's tennis odds oscillate from a sliding scale between a straight set win to a four set win and then increasing in a five set win. That's just a testament to how difficult this match is to handicap and the reasonable probability it could go either way.
