We handicap the nominees and analyze the Oscar odds for this year’s Best Supporting Actress. Let’s see which supporting lady takes home the hardware and cash in our Oscar picks.

However, this category is loaded at the top with women who could easily qualify as leading ladies, yet that category was so dense that Alicia Vikander, Rooney Mara and to a lesser extent the impeccable Miss Winslet were handed a consolation prize as nominees for Best Supporting Actress.

There is a good reason why Alicia Vikander is the odds on favorite to win this category as she was not only compelling in her role as Gerda Wegener, the conflicted spouse of pioneering transgender patient Lili Elbe, but was able to bask in the brilliance of Eddie Redmayne’s tour de force performance and copped the SAG and Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actress.

Yet, there was another who was even better and that would be the sublime Rooney Mara who shared the silver screen with the immaculate Cate Blanchett who is up for an Oscar herself for Best Actress. Some would make the case that you could flip-flop either of these two Hollywood starlets in the two categories and it would still make sense. Mara was the favorite in this category heading into this competition but when her movie Carol was excluded from Best Picture and her director Todd Haynes was overlooked for Best Director her fortunes began to fall and her Oscar odds began to rise.

Nevertheless, we will stick with Mara as the best choice to win this category despite the naysayers believing that those snubs will cause her to fall. Mara held her own and then some with Best Actress nominee Blanchett and will get her just desserts as we include her in our Oscar picks in this category.

Best Supporting Actress Oscar Pick: Rooney Mara +350
Best Line Offered: at Bet365
