Names to Watch at The Open Championship

Greg Norman ????

The frontman for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Invitational Series, Norman was declined an invitation to the R&A's Celebration of Champions this year. "Shark" won The Open in 1986 and 1993, but he's made himself one of golf's greatest villains now.

Brooks Koepka ????

Arguably LIV Golf's biggest addition, the four-time major winner is now a forgotten name heading into The Open, with odds as high as +5000 via DraftKings Sportsbook. Public perception is widely believed to be a significant motivating factor for him, and backing an angry Koepka at those odds is tempting.

Bryson DeChambeau ????

One of the first golfers to be a rumored target of LIV Golf, DeChambeau ultimately signed a reported $125-million deal. A fifth-place finisher during last year's PGA Tour Player Impact Program, DeChambeau has completely faded out of the spotlight. His odds are as high as +13000 to win The Open after missing the cut at the Masters and tying for 56th during the U.S. Open.

Victor Perez ????

Perez has never won a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, but he claimed his second European/DP World Tour victory at the Dutch Open in May. His first win came at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2019, which played two rounds at St Andrews. He could be worth a dart throw, with odds ranging from +11000 to +20000

Lowry ????

The winner of the 148th Open Championship in 2019, Shane Lowry has climbed back to No. 22 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) with five top-10 finishes in 2022. Those results include a T-3 at the Masters in April, and a T-9 during the Irish Open two weeks ago.

The Irishman will surely generate a large following this week.

Rahm ?

Jon Rahm remains No. 3 in the OWGR, even after a T-55 finish at the Scottish Open. His lone win of 2022 came against a watered-down field at the Mexico Open. Although he's notched five other top-10 results in 2022, it's tough to gauge how Rahm currently stands against the world's best after finishing outside of the top 10 during each of the year's first three majors.

Scheffler ????

Scottie Scheffler won four times over a six-event stretch from early February through the Masters to seize control of the OWGR. He's since missed two cuts, with two runner-up finishes through his last seven events. His odds to win The Open have increased along the way.

Morikawa ????

Much like Scheffler, there's a hush around Collin Morikawa coming into this week, despite his status as the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year. A return to a links course will suit his game well, as Morikawa is one of the PGA Tour's best ball-strikers.

Hovland ????

Viktor Hovland enters the week at No. 9 in the OWGR, but he's just 17th by the consensus odds to win this week. He missed back-to-back cuts at the U.S. Open and Scottish Open. Hovland hasn't registered a top-10 finish since a T-9 during The Players Championship.

Schauffele ????

Xander Schauffele's back-to-back wins at the Travelers Championship and Scottish Open vaulted him from No. 15 to No. 5 in the OWGR over a two-week stretch. No one has averaged more true total strokes gained on the field over their last 20 rounds than Schauffele.

Spieth ?

Jordan Spieth tied for fourth at St Andrews during the 2015 Open Championship. He won the 2017 Open and was the runner-up in 2021 at Royal St. George's. Though he's best known for his success at Augusta Nation Golf Club, Spieth also excels on links courses and will be a popular pick among American bettors.

Zalatoris ????

Will Zalatoris still hasn't produced a PGA Tour victory, but he's finished T-8 or better in six of his last seven completed majors. He withdrew from last year's Open Championship and will now look to finally break through in his first attempt at the Old Course.

McIlroy ????

Rory McIlroy is the biggest liability at sportsbooks like BetMGM this week. Though he hasn't played St Andrews professionally since 2010 as a 21-year-old and hasn't won a major since the 2014 Open Championship, the Northern Irishman is rightfully the most popular bet.

Tiger Woods ????

Tiger is teeing it up competitively for the first time since withdrawing from the PGA Championship due to an injury. However, he's been seen playing several practice rounds at St Andrews and nearby courses with the likes of McIlroy and Justin Thomas in recent weeks.

Though betting on him to win outright isn't advisable, all golf fans will be hoping Woods can secure his 16th major victory with his fourth at The Open and third at St Andrews.
