We're coming down to the wire in the NASCAR season. Who are the best bets for our sports picks as we head to Phoenix this weekend?
Jimmie Johnson clinched his fourth consecutive fall race win at Texas last week but he has already been eliminated from Cup contention and there are still three spots in the final four up for grabs heading into this weekend’s Quicken Loans Race For Heroes 500 from the Phoenix International Raceway. Jeff Gordon has already clinched his spot while Kyle Busch leads the points race for at least two of the remaining spots followed by Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr and Carl Edwards close behind. Here is a look at the sports odds and the best bets for the sports picks for this weekend’s Quicken Loans Race For Heroes 500.
About The Track
The Chase for the Sprint Cup returns to the one-mile tri-oval this weekend and while a number of drivers have had success at this track over the years there is nobody that has been better than Kevin Harvick, who has won each of the last three fall races at this track. Past success is an important measure to consider when evaluating the best bets for this weekend but just as important is what needs to happen for the top drivers to find their way through to the next round.
Consensus Best Bet To Win Outright: Kevin Harvick +300
Harvick has won each of the last three races at Phoenix and his six-career wins at the track are the most in the Sprint Cup dating back to 1988 when it first became part of the NASCAR circuit. Harvick needs to finish second or better in order to clinch a spot in the next round, finish third with at least one lap led or finish fourth with the most laps led in order to get through to the next round but we will bet on him to leave nothing to chance and win this race outright. Harvick has finished in the top-10 in four of the last six races including a win at Dover and considering his track record and what it will take for him to advance this weekend we are banking on him clinching his fourth win of the Sprint Cup season.
Consensus Best Bet To Finish Top-Five: Kyle Busch +600
Busch has posted top-five finishes in each of the last two races and he needs to finish third or better, fourth with at least one lap led or fifth with the most laps led in order to get through to the next round. Busch had a disappointing run at Phoenix last season but he wasn’t in the same position he is in now and the sense of urgency with a chance to make a serious run for the title this year can be the difference between him struggling and finishing in the top-five again. Busch has everything it will take to win this race outright and while we already like Harvick to take the checkered flag we also like Busch as a lock to finish in the top-five and find a way to book his spot in to the next round.
