NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series will run its second and final road course race Sunday with the I Love New York 355 at the Glen. All the action from Watkins Glen International is slated to get underway at 3 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network.
Kyle Busch finally got that victory he was looking for after crossing the finish line first at Pocono last Sunday. Kevin Harvick posted a solid second-place run as my top valued favorite and Martin Truex Jr. stayed hot by finishing third.
The following is a look at my top valued favorite, contender and long shot to win this Sunday afternoon’s race on the road course at Watkins Glen based on betting odds provided by 5Dimes.
Top Valued Favorite
Busch is a tempting pick to win this race as well at +450 betting odds, but I am looking to stretch the value a bit by going with Kevin Harvick at +800 odds. I liked him last week at longer +750 odds, and he came close to paying off. Given the fact that his only points-race victory this season was on the road course at Sonoma only adds value to this week’s odds. The No. 4 Ford is holding down the third spot in the current Cup series standings with 726 total points on the strength of eight runs inside the top five through the first 21 point races this season. Along with a third-place finish in this race in 2015, Harvick has one victory on this road course.
Top Valued Contender
Kyle Larson has been tearing up the ovals all season long with two victories and an impressive seven second-place runs. I am betting on that form to carry over to this week’s road course as my top valued contender to win at +1400 betting odds. The No. 42 Chevrolet remains in second place in the standings with 738 points in just his fourth full-time season racing at NASCAR’s highest level. While his racing experience on road courses is not that deep, Larson did manage to finish fourth at Watkins Glen in his first race here in 2014.
Top Valued Long Shot
Picking long shots to win on a road course offers some value as long as you focus your attention on the drivers that have experience at making more than left turns with their car. The driver with the best value in my book for winning Sunday would be Joey Logano at +2200. He has been rather quiet this season with one checkered flag at Phoenix early in the season as part of his eight runs inside the top five, but he is still the type of versatile driver who can win on a course like this, especially in light of his recent performance at the Glen. He guided the No. 22 Ford to a second-place finish in this race last season after winning in 2015. Going back to the 2011 season, Logano has finished seventh or better at Watkins Glen five times in his last six trips around this course.
Odds For Other Notable Drivers
As mentioned, Kyle Busch is a +450 favorite to win again this week followed by Martin Truex Jr. at +500 betting odds. Joining Harvick at +800 is Kurt Busch, AJ Allmendinger and Brad Keselowski. Next on the list is Clint Bowyer at +900 along with Denny Hamlin at +1000 and Jimmie Johnson at +1200 betting odds.Talk NASCAR Betting In Our Racing Forum
