This, along with the Timbers/Galaxy game, are the closest in terms of the soccer odds. Various sportsbooks have San Jose barely favored at a price of +150, with Seattle at about +190 to score the three points.
You have to consider a draw this weekend as well, with that option priced out at +220 at certain books like bet365.
San Jose Earthquakes
Disappointment after disappointment has been the name of the game for San Jose this season. The Earthquakes are ahead of just one team, Chivas, in the Western Conference.
It was just last season that San Jose finished as the number one seed in the conference. They ended up nine points ahead of second-place Real Salt Lake and had a goal differential of plus- 29. Oh how things have changed.
San Jose's once potent attacking force has all but disappeared. The team has scored just 20 goals in 20 league fixtures, the second-lowest mark in the West.
Though they're both terrific players in their own right, you have to give blame to Chris Wondolowski and Alan Gordon. Wondolowski, after scoring 27 goals in the 2012/13 season, has scored just five times in 17 MLS appearances this season. Gordon meanwhile has just three goals to his name.
One positive though is that San Jose has been far better on their home field. They've lost just one time in nine home matches this season.
There has been no consistency to Seattle's play over the last couple of months or so. The Sounders will enter Saturday afternoon's game having alternated wins and losses over their previous four games.
Three days after beating DC United 2-0 at home, Seattle fell short in a 2-0 away loss to the Vancouver Whitecaps. With the defeat, the Sounders moved to 3-1-5 in nine matches outside of Seattle.
Seattle, like San Jose, has had trouble scoring goals, especially on the road. In those nine away fixtures they've totaled only seven goals. Let's see how they fare against a San Jose side that's given up 32 goals so far this season, quite a high number.
There's still reason to be optimistic if you're a Sounders fan. They have plenty of matches to make up and they're only 10 points behind first-place Real Salt Lake. There's still time for them to storm up the table.
Three points in San Jose would be the perfect start to making that happen.
History is quite helpful whenever we have to make our final soccer picks, so the fact Seattle smashed San Jose 4-0 in May has to be considered. Lamar Neagle had two goals and Mauro Rosales and Obafemi Martins scored as well.
The Sounders may be third-from-bottom in the Western Conference, but they still have a lot of matches to make up. We expect Seattle to slowly but surely make their way up the standings.
So, even though the Earthquakes are at home here, we are going to side with the Sounders to squeak out a close win. This kind of result could be exactly what Martins and company need to make a run and eventually end up in one of the playoff spots.
