Both teams are tied on 30 points right now, but the Timbers will be the home team this weekend, resulting in them being favored in the soccer odds. They can be found at approximately +140.
The Galaxy are obviously are a very recognizable team, at least when it comes to American soccer, and they're listed at +200 to steal away three points from Portland. A draw has been set at about +225.
Since a scoreless draw with this same Galaxy team only a few weeks ago, the Timbers have beaten Colorado 3-0 at home before losing to Columbus 1-0 on the road.
A return to Portland will be just what the doctor ordered.
Why's that? The Timbers' home-field advantage is legit. They've only lost one match of eight on their own turf, while scoring 14 goals and allowing only five.
Generally, the two players you need to watch out for on Portland are Ryan Johnson and the exciting Darlington Nagbe, who have both scored five league goals this season. Diego Valeri and Rodney Wallace have four goals apiece as well.
However, make sure you know the status of Will Johnson, who is trying to recover from illness. Portland has missed the midfielder badly whenever he hasn't played, especially since he leads the team with six goals so far.
Check out my picks on the Seattle Sounders, here.
Following a hard-to-take 3-2 loss to San Jose, the Galaxy have responded well by winning consecutive games over FC Dallas and the Columbus Crew. Both victories were at home.
Last weekend, L.A. topped Dallas 2-0 behind two relatively late goals. Marcelo Fazzio Sarvas got on the scoresheet in the 65th minute and then Hector Jimenez added some insurance 15 minutes later.
Now the Galaxy have to try and get the job done on the road, where their results haven't been all that promising. They've lost six of ten matches outside of Los Angeles.
Having secured six points out of six over their previous two fixtures, the Galaxy have moved into fourth place in the Western Conference, making them even with their upcoming opponents on Saturday night.
Overall, letting Mike Magee go to Chicago hasn't been the best bit of business the team could have done, but they're getting goals out of Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan is starting to really get his act together as well.
The Galaxy have more momentum at the moment, having won two straight games heading into Saturday night. Wins over solid teams like Dallas and Columbus will do wonders for Bruce Arena's team's confidence.
However, Portland is a very tough environment to play in, which L.A. will find out first-hand.
The earlier meeting between these two teams ended in a 0-0 draw, but we foresee at least a couple of goals in the rematch in front of a frenzied Portland crowd. We believe the Timbers will have the better of the chances and will therefore be selecting them with our soccer picks for the weekend.
