Is picking the host Sounders to bust out of their recent funk the prescription here? Let’s look at recent trends in this fairly new rivalry & see if there is anything to be learned to make some picks.

Odds Overview
Vancouver Whitecaps at Seattle Sounders [Sunday 03:00] (TSN1, MLS Live, RDS2, Q13 FOX (USA) 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT): This Week 24 Western Conference fixture sees the slumping Seattle Sounders (10-2-10, 29 GF-21 GA) playing host to the Vancouver Whitecaps (11-3-8, 27 GF-22 GA) at CenturyLink Field in Seattle on Saturday night in a Pacific Northwest showdown which the hosts would seem to need more, considering their recent slide. Soccer odds makers here have made the host Sounders +120 favorites, the visiting Whitecaps +229 Underdogs and the Draw at +225 (bet365). The Total Goals in this weekend fixture is 2½, with the Over juiced at +100 and Under priced at a high -137 (bet365). Some Props wagers for this game from the Pacific Northwest: Both Teams To Score: ‘Yes’ -137, ‘No’ +100 (Sky Bet); To Win To Nil: Sounders +280, Whitecaps +450 (BetVictor); and, Draw No Bet: Sounders -162, Whitecaps +120 (bet365).

Vancouver Whitecaps FC
The Vancouver Whitecaps (6-2-4 Road, 11 GF-9 GA) have proven to be the best Road team in the MLS so far this season as we head into Wednesday’s All-Star Game between the MLS All-Stars and  Tottenham Hotspur at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado (FOX Sports 1, UniMás, TSN, RDS, 9 p.m. ET/7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT), and it’s not even close with the Whitecaps 6 Road Wins (and 18 points) twice as many as every other team in the league right save for Toronto FC which has 4 Wins away from home. So, something about the Canadian teams being good on the Road in the MLS? Maybe not as the Montreal Impact are still sitting on just 1 Road Win and 7 Away goals as we trudge into August. In Week 24 play, Vancouver (12/1 to win MLS Cup, BetVictor) hosted the San Jose Earthquakes and the Whitecaps rolled to a 3-1 victory to keep San Jose winless at BC Place. On Offense Vancouver is led by 23-year-old Uruguayan striker Octavio Rivero (7 goals), Matias Laba (4 goals) , Kekuta Manneh (4 goals), Chilean MF Pedro Morales (4 goals), Darien Mattocks (3 goals)—on loan from Spanish La Liga’s Málaga and a very nice addition to the Whitecaps roster who was named MLS Newcomer of the Year—Cristian Techera (2 goals) and Gershon Koffie (1 goal). In goal, GK David Ousted—who was named MLS Player of the Month for June—is a huge reason that this Vancouver team is currently in 3rd place in the Western Conference and the best Road team in the MLS. This makes betting against them away from home a hard thing to do, opening up the potential to either back Vancouver as an underdog or contemplate a Draw, depending on the opponent and situation, of course.

Seattle Sounders FC
Lately, the Seattle Sounders (7-1-3 Home, 14 GF-7 GA) have been horrific and losing ground in the standings, in large part because star striker Clint Dempsey (7 goals) and captain Brad Evans have both been playing for the USMNT in Gold Cup competition here and because striker Obafemi Martins (7 goals) has been out with  groin injury. Seattle has been so bad that it has not only lost to the teams with the two worst records in the MLS, the Chicago Fire (1-0 at Toyota Park) and the Colorado Rapids (1-0 at CenturyLink Field), and couldn’t muster a goal in either contest. Even without Dempsey, Martins and Evans, this is not a good thing. The Sounders (+600 to win MLS Cup, BetVictor) need to right the ship and it all starts here on Saturday night...against the team with the best Road record in the MLS. Ouch. So hopefully Dempsey and evans can return and contribute and others like Chad Barrett (3 goals), Lamar Neagle (3 goals),Marco Pappa (2 goals), Leo Gonzalez (1 goal), Gonzalo Pineda, Tyrone Mears (1 goal) and Cristian Roldan can step up. Both teams come into this game with almost nearly identical GF-GA stats: Sounders 25 GF-21 GA, Whitecaps 24 GF-21 GA although Seattle (22) has played one more game than Vancouver (21).

Current Form, Series Trends, Conclusions
Lifetime in MLS action, this series couldn’t be any more close if it were identical twins named Susie wearing the same yellow dress with red polka-dots both dating a guy named Paulie. This series is 4-4-4 with both teams scoring 17 goals in the 12 meetings. The Sounders are 2-1-2 (8 GF-9 GA) in Seattle and despite having one of the best Homepitch advantages in the MLS, playing poorly and against the Whitecaps is not the greatest situation for the Seattle Sounders. And that’s if Dempsey and Evans make their presumed return to the Emerald City. The last time these two played, the Sounders won 2-0 in Vancouver earlier this MLS season in Week 3, while the last time these two clubs met here in Seattle (last season), the Whitecaps and GK Ousted earned a 1-0 Clean Sheet victory. And, as a matter of fact, the upstart Whitecaps were unbeaten in 5 straight meetings (5-2-0, 10 GF-3 GA) against the Sounders, so backing upstart Vancouver for this soccer pick as an underdog is not a bad idea, although Seattle is desperate for a Win and could be getting its captain Evans and Dempsey back.

Predicted Final Score: Seattle Sounders 1 Vancouver Whitecaps 1

Major League Soccer Picks: Under 2½ -137, Whitecaps Draw No Bet +120 at Bet365
