 GGG Favored in Super Fight

The God of War, Gennady Golovkin, has been installed by the boxing odds makers as anywhere from a -160 to -180 favorite but that is a far cry from the line set by Bovada two years ago when talk first surfaced of a mega-fight between Alvarez and Golovkin. The online bookmaker installed the Kazakhstani king at a lopsided -350. Since then Canelo Alvarez, the Mexican sensation who recently scored a rather perfunctory, if not surgical, victory over fellow Mexican Julio Chavez Jr. has beaten up Miguel Cotto (UD), Amir Khan (KO), Liam Smith (TKO) and the previously mentioned Chavez Jr.

This will be a contrast in styles with the thunderous dual sledgehammers of Golovkin pitted against the machine gun counterpunching and ring guile of Alvarez. But what may determine this fight is an opponent that always wins in the end – time. Unfortunately, the mega-fights take years to make and eventually are settled by fighters where one or both are at least somewhat diminished from their halcyon days. Look no further than the super flop that was Mayweather vs. Pacquiao. In this case, we see that Alvarez is clearly entering his prime at the age of 26 while Golovkin looked almost mortal in his unanimous decision victory over a game Daniel Jacobs.

As of this writing, approximately four months before the best middleweights on the planet throw hands and a location yet to be determined, online sportsbook 5Dimes has Golovkin as a -185 favorite with a return of +160 on Canelo. If you have a penchant for live underdogs, Saul Alvarez may be the right man for your boxing picks.
