The leading candidates to win the Kentucky Derby are emerging, with Bolt d’Oro topping the chart. Let's look at some numbers and offer an early pick for the May 5 race.

Horse Racing: Kentucky Derby Futures Odds

The best odds you’re going to find for the 144th Kentucky Derby are out there right now. However, whittling down the 3-year-olds who actually might compete on May 5 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, is half the battle. So many thoroughbreds remain in the potential field, and the bulk of the Derby prep races have not been run.

Four horses are priced at odds of less than 10/1 at offshore sportsbook SportsBetting.ag: Bolt d’Oro (+650), the third-place finisher in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile race; Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Good Magic (+750); undefeated Bob Baffert-owned and Los Alamitos Futurity and Sham Stakes winner McKinzie (+750); and Holy Bull Stakes winner Audible (+950).

Other horses to watch from this distance include Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Solomini, Sam F. Davis Stakes winner Flameaway, Risen Star Stakes winner and Wayne Lukas-trained Bravazo, Champagne Stakes winner Firenze Fire, Dubai Carnival star Gold Town, unbeaten Magnum Moon, Southwest Stakes winner My Boy Jack (+2000) and Smarty Jones Stakes winner Mourinho.

Prep Races Can Be Revealing

There are a plethora of Kentucky Derby Championship Series prep races coming up in the next two months. Following the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes from Gulfstream Park are three March 10 events: the Gotham Stakes from Aqueduct Racetrack, the Tampa Bay Derby from Tampa Bay Downs, and the key San Felipe Stakes from Santa Anita Park. The horse racing world and Kentucky Derby Futures bettors will be focused on the San Felipe, where a real Derby favorite might emerge. Curlin-sired and Baffert-trained Solomini, Medaglia d’Oro-sired and current favorite Bolt d’Oro, and Street Sense-sired McKinzie are expected to compete in the San Felipe.

The Jeff Ruby Steaks from Turfway Park is March 17, the Louisiana Derby from the Fair Grounds Race Course is March 24, the Sunland Derby from Sunland Park is March 25, and on March 31 are the UAE Derby from Meydan Racecourse in Dubai and the Florida Derby from Gulfstream.

The G2 Rebel Stakes — the second leg of the Oaklawn Stakes program along with the Southwest Stakes (My Boy Jack, winner) and the prestigious Arkansas Derby (April 14) — is scheduled to be run at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on March 17, with Kentucky Derby hopeful Magnum Moon (14/1 to win Kentucky Derby, SportsBetting.ag) expected to run. In April, the race to just try to get into the Kentucky Derby's potential 20-horse field will get even more intense with the Wood Memorial from Aqueduct Racetrack, the Blue Grass Stakes from Keeneland Park and the Santa Anita Derby from Santa Anita Park (all April 7); and the Arkansas Derby from Oaklawn Park and the Lexington Stakes from Keeneland Park (both April 14).
