Man City have been out of sorts of late and dropped to third in the table following a 2-0 defeat at Stoke last weekend. They are still title favorites (+150 at Bet365) despite a slump in form that also saw them battered 4-1 by Liverpool, but they need to get back to winning ways. This match represents the perfect opportunity to get some points on the board and begin the bid to topple Leicester and Arsenal and return to the top of the Premiership.

Swansea City
Swansea are a team bereft of confidence and in absolutely woeful form, so Man City’s players will sense an opportunity to kick them while they are down. Gary Monk, the once popular Swansea manager, has become odds-on favorite to be the next Premiership manager to be sacked (-333 at PaddyPower) after presiding over a simply disastrous run of form. The Swans have won just once in their last 11 league matches, losing seven and drawing three. It has left them just one point above the relegation zone and a team that finished eighth last season are now very much in a relegation dogfight this time around. They need to recapture the form they found at the start of the season, when Andre Ayew was inspiring them to victories over Man Utd and Newcastle and they were being tipped for a Europa League place. But they could not pick a worse fixture to try to turn around their fortunes.

Manchester City
Man City have the best home record in the league, having won six out of eight games in front of their own fans this season, and will go into this game confident of victory. Manager Manuel Pellegrini has blamed their recent poor form on fatigue. He has a small squad – despite the hundreds of millions of pounds he has spent on new players in recent years – and it has been stretched very thin as they have competed on three fronts in the Premiership, Champions League and League Cup. They have a Champions League group game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Wednesday, ahead of Saturday’s tie with Swansea, but Pellegrini may take this opportunity to rest players. Man City have already qualified for the next phase of the Champions League, so they don’t need to win this game. They have an outside chance of finishing top of the group if they beat Monchengladbach and group leaders Juventus lose to Sevilla, thus assuring themselves of a potentially easier draw in the last 16, although Juventus will probably beat Sevilla anyway, so Pellegrini may be able to rest players ahead of the Swansea game.

He must be desperate to get captain Vincent Kompany back in the side. With the Belgian centre-back in the side, they have conceded 0.12 goals per game. Without him, they have conceded 2.14 goals per game. The facts are stark – without Kompany they are all over the place defensively. Before betting on this match, it would be worth checking for an injury update on him.

Best Picks
But either way, City should have enough to beat Swansea, but the price on this isn’t particularly attractive. They are best priced at -333 with Boyle Sports and Paddy Power, which looks a banker with Kompany in the side, but a bit risky without him. Instead you could go for Man City to be winning at half-time and full-time, which is -120 in the soccer odds board with 888.

Chances are Kompany will miss the match – his initial return date was set at December 21 – so let’s assume that. You would then expect Swansea to score, as City have failed to keep a clean sheet in all seven games without their captain this season. You would also expect Man City to score, as they have such a wealth of expensively-assembled attacking riches, and Swansea are hopeless defensively. That makes the -110 Boyle Sports have on both teams to score look a great soccer pick

City have also massively missed Sergio Aguero, their talismanic striker who has been dogged by injury problems. Like Kompany, he missed the defeat at Stoke and is unlikely to start against Swansea. Therefore you could look to his replacement Wilfried Bony for first goalscorer, priced at +320 with Coral. Also look at Kevin De Bruyne, who is +500 at Coral and has been a source of important goals for the Citizens all season.
