The Reds, fresh off a second-place finish in the Premier League last season, will try to open their 2014-15 account in style when they play host to Southampton at Anfield. We know who the soccer betting odds will favor, but what's the smartest play?

Odds Overview
At home on Merseyside, Liverpool enters Sunday's match as a big-time favorite at every sportsbook. The lines range from -260 to as high as -320 on a Reds win, with a Southampton victory priced in a wide range of +550 to +975 and a draw quoted at approximately +400 to +450.

The Reds surprised quite a few people with a terrific showing in the league in 2013-14. They were atop the Premier League standings for an extended period time and had destiny in their own hands, only for them to relinquish the title to Manchester City right at the finish line.

Brendan Rodgers worked his magic with Liverpool, getting the side to play some very attractive soccer, but more importantly inspiring them to stamp out some terrific results, especially at Anfield.

Luis Suarez, of course, was a catalyst for the side in that successful campaign, but he's no longer around. He's moved to Barcelona, with the Reds spending the large sum of money they received in return on a number of different players to help shore up their depth.

Looking ahead to the new season, there's still reason for optimism around Merseyside despite the loss of the world-class Suarez. Daniel Sturridge has his chance to lead the line and will be expected to score at a great rate, while young players like Raheem Sterling, Coutinho and Jordan Henderson should be ready to take on more responsibility too. We can't forget about the legendary Steven Gerrard either.

Liverpool also brought in a few of Southampton's top players, including Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren, while Lazar Markovic, Emre Can and a couple others are also new to the squad. The depth is there for the Reds, but will they make the most of it?

Despite a solid eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season, the Saints may find it very difficult to replicate that showing in the coming campaign.

That's because Southampton has lost a number of key players over the summer, including Lallana, Lambert, Lovren, Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers. They've managed to make a few good additions, particularly with the signing of Fraser Forster, who should step in immediately and be the starting goalkeeper for the Saints.

There's also a new manager in town, with Ronald Koeman taking over for Mauricio Pochettino, who left to take on the reigns at Tottenham.

With so many changes happening within the club, it's hard to imagine Southampton getting off to such a fast start like they did in 2013-14. It's going to take time for the new players (and the new manager) to settle in and adjust to one another.

The Saints would have obviously liked an easier fixture to open their Premier League account, but they'll have to deal with the cards they were dealt. A positive result at Anfield would give Southampton a huge boost in confidence to start off their season.

Premier League Pick
There's little value in backing Liverpool on a straight money-line selection, so we've got to be creative with our soccer picks.

There's no chance we're putting our faith in Southampton at this juncture, not until they prove they're settled in under their new manager.

Meanwhile, the Reds have looked excellent during the preseason and are coming off a terrific set of results at Anfield from last season. They should be able to win comfortably at home on Sunday, so consider siding with them to win by two more goals with your Soccer betting picks.
