Lions vs. Stampeders Week 10 CFL Picks: Which Team Survives Without Their Starting Running Back?

Two of the better teams in the league, the 6-1 BC Lions and the 5-2 Calgary Stampeders, meet in a Week 10 CFL showdown. See who we like with our Lions-Stampeders picks.

The Lions have lost only one game this year and that was to the league-leading Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 5. They are 2-0 against the spread on the road. Meanwhile, the Stampeders are 0-3 against the spread at home.

Lions vs. Stampeders Odds Analysis

The Lions opened as favorites at -120 on the moneyline. The line has flipped and now lists BC as an even-money underdog with a 1-point spread. Seventy percent of the cash is backing the Stampeders.

The total opened at 53.5 and has gone up by half a point in some spots. Most books have the game total at 53.5 at -110 odds.

Lions (-130)

The Lions have been on fire and are dominating in most statistical categories this season. Prior to the Blue Bombers game on Thursday against the Montreal Alouettes, Lions QB Nathan Rourke was leading the league in passing; his 21 passing TDs still lead the league.

With both teams missing their starting running back for Saturday's matchup, as James Butler (ankle, ribs) is questionable and Ka’Deem Carey (hamstring) was ruled out, the passing game should have an even bigger impact. Stamps QB Bo Levi Mitchell has only passed for seven touchdowns through seven games. The Lions should be able to easily control the game through the air.

Lions -2.5 (-110)

It’s expected that David Mackie will fill in for the Lions at running back. He hasn’t had many opportunities this year with how well Butler has played but does have a respectable 5.5 yards per carry. Also, look for Rourke to scramble as he’s racked up 233 rushing yards this year with a 7.3 yard per carry average.

Dedrick Mills and Peyton Logan will try and pick up the slack for the Stampeders with Carey out, however, the Lions’ pass game has far exceeded the Stampeders and they should pull ahead easily.

Lions vs. Stampeders O/U Pick

Under 53.5 (-110)

Without the balance provided by the regular starting running backs for these teams, I expect points to be at a premium in this Week 10 matchup. The high points total seems to be too much and I like the Under. While the Lions should have no trouble scoring, the Stampeders could have more trouble moving the ball against a stiff defense. Especially given that they are missing their top receiving option in Malik Henry as well as their fifth receiving option in Carey.
