Messi was making his first appearance in the starting lineup after the calf injury suffered during a training session on August 5. He came off the bench in the games against Borussia Dortmund and Granada.
Messi’s partnership with Antoine Griezmann was already working, the Argentine provided an assist for Griezmann’s goal at the 6th minute (his third of the season) but he noticed some discomfort on the left side of his left thigh around the 30th minute and was replaced by Ousmane Dembélé at halftime.
The injury does not seem to be serious but Messi will undergo tests today and he will miss Saturday’s game against Getafe because Barça does not want to rush him back. Messi’s discomfort is in a different area than the injury he had been recovering from and we will know the exact extent of it in the coming hours.
Lionel Messi won FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award on Monday, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk. It is Messi’s first time winning the award since FIFA founded it in 2016.
“It’s a special night for me. I’m lucky to have my wife and two of my three children here with me. It’s the first time they’re here and to be able to enjoy this with them is unique,” he commented on the stage at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
‘The Best’ was a substitute for FIFA’s Ballon d’Or, which was jointly awarded with France Football magazine from 2010 to 2016. Messi won it in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015. He also won the 2009 edition of the FIFA World Player award.
