Primera Division action gets underway this weekend with Sevilla and Levante on Friday. Join us as we rundown through this matchup and serve up choice soccer picks.

Sevilla Struggling At the Off
So far, it hasn’t been a bright start to Primera Division action for Sevilla. They are down in the dumps, sat 17th place behind a winless run through two rounds comprised of an opening draw and an ensuing loss. Of course, it’s just two rounds into the season; rather early to hit the panic button.

These are worrisome times nonetheless for Sevilla, who are after a fifth place finish in La Liga last season and, not least, winning Europa League. Expectations run high at the club and Los Rojiblancos are not only going to have to find a way to get back on track this weekend at the expense of middleweights Levante (finished 14th in La Liga last season) but also prepare for Champions League action next weekend.

Fortunately, Sevilla’s head-to-head record against Levante is a positive one, which lends itself nicely towards their rather favorable soccer odds as the -133 road favourites. The two sides have collided 38 times, with Los Rojiblancos trotting off with 23 wins, seven draws and just 8 losses. Home record includes a 13-5-1 mark and away record includes a 10-2-7 mark.

Sevilla’s schedule at the start of the season was a tough one and partly explains their rather disappointing start. A difficult trip to Malaga was followed by a visit from former La Liga Champions Atletico Madrid, two matches that were always going to present a challenge in taking maximum points. (They settled on a scoreless draw in Andalusia before suffering a 3-0 defeat to Atleti at home.)

In Levante, they face a truly beatable opponent. Levante are currently 13th in the table but they are also 0-1-1 on the season. The only reason why they rank higher is because of a -1-point differential. Levante opened the season with a 2-1 loss at home to lightweights Celta de Vigo and then settled on a scoreless draw against promoted outfits Las Palmas.

That Levante have carved a point against potential relegation favorites isn’t encouraging at all. Actually, it’s downright concerning ahead of their match against Sevilla, a side that is much tougher on paper than their previous opponents. As a result, they are matched as the significant home underdogs at +400 with the draw trading at +260 soccer odds at Bet365.

Granted, Sevilla have lost some of their stars in the offseason: Carlos Bacca and Aleix Vidal have moved to greener pastures. Nevertheless, Sevilla are dangerous opponents particularly on the attack. Only recently, we saw how potent and lethal they can be when they demonstrated their free-scoring ways in European Super Cup action against Barcelona. Although they lost the match 5-4, they did come back from 4-1 down to level the score and send the match into extra time.

Levante have conceded to Sevilla in all of their three previous meetings in La Liga, including their last meeting at Estadio Ciudad de Valencia towards the tail end of last season – a 2-1 loss that saw Sevilla take the early lead with two strikes in the first half.

Earlier in the season, Sevilla salvaged the point with a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Levante. The last time Levante beat Sevilla was in January 2014 in Valencia, marking their second meeting of the 2013-2014 season. Levante twice came back from behind to level the score before scoring the winning goal late in the second half.

Soccer Betting Verdict:
Recent head-to-head action between these two sides is somewhat level with each side winning one of the last four meetings and the remaining two settling on a draw. That alone could give the hosts Levante some measure of optimism. Another source of encouragement could be Sevilla’s lack of form in the early rounds. If there’s a time to strike, it’s when a side is down in the dumps.

As a result, a bet on Levante to win or draw isn’t as outrageous as the soccer odds would suggest. There’s also the matter of Champions League action coming up for Sevilla, a pivotal European engagement manager Unai Emery will be mindful of when making his selections. That said, a loss to Levante would send the wrong message to their European counterparts, not to mention take the shine off Sevilla’s chances to emerge from the group stage,. Surely, that’s not the sort of impression Unai Emery and Los Rojiblancos want to give Borussia M’gladbach ahead of their visit on Tuesday. Take Sevilla to win outrigh as our soccer pick at -133 soccer odds and both teams to score at -110 at Bet365.
