There’s a classic game on Sunday in the Spanish top flight, in fact when Barcelona take on Real Madrid it’s the El Clásico!

It is the most followed club soccer match in the world, it’s watched by hundreds of millions of people and this time, whoever you back, your Humble Handicapper is expecting to clean up.

Barcelona won the last meeting 2-1 but the Catalan’s previous league win against Real Madrid was in December 2011 in the Spanish capital, as they came from behind and came out on top 3-1. Recent history is weighted towards Real Madrid and Barca have taken just four points from their last four league meetings with Madrid.

Enough with weight…WHERE’S THE MONEY MIKE?
Barcelona are facing Real Madrid for the 226th time in all competitions. The Catalans have 88 wins to Real's 90. However, the Castilian giants have won just three of their last 11 Liga encounters with Barcelona (W3, D3, L7).

The last two meetings between these two sides have both ended by the same scoreline, 2-1. Both times it was to the home side, but that also means that there was one win for Real and one for Barca in the last two. This is as good a time as any to let you know that Barca winning 2-1 is offered up at best soccer odds of 11/1 and Real winning by the same scoreline is available at 10/1.

Last games
Barcelona’s last outing was a 7-0 bonanza where Lionel Messi and his hat-trick helped Barca sweep aside Osasuna and close the gap on Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in Spain’s title race. This means that Messi has now scored 232 goals for Barcelona in the Spanish top-flight and is La Liga's third highest goalscorer of all time. Pub bore alert ** Messi is two behind ex-Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid striker Hugo Sanchez on 234 goals and Athletic Bilbao's Telmo Zarra’s 252 goals. It was the second seven-goal haul for Barca this season, following the opening-day thrashing of Levante. It was also the perfect bounce-back after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat at Real Valladolid the previous weekend. The best soccer odds on Messi being Spain’s top scorer this season are as high as 14/1 while Real’s Christiano Ronaldo is at 1/5.

Soccer Picks: La Liga Betting Futures

A less impressive win for Real
A single first-half goal was enough to stretch Real Madrid's unbeaten run to 30 matches (in all completions) as the La Liga leaders beat Malaga 1-0 last weekend. The victory keeps Real three points clear of city rivals Atletico Madrid (who beat Espanyol 1-0 later on Saturday).

Real have 22 league victories this term and Barca have 21. Pointswise Real are on 70 while Barca are just about in punching distance on 66 points, this is a six-pointer, no doubt about it.  And it is as good a time as any to take a look at the basics, Real Madrid winning is the bookies favoured outcome at 6/5, Barca winning is at 2/1 and a draw (pah!) is at 5/2.

It’s also a good time to mention that Barca have scored 81 goals in 28 games (and conceded 22) while Real have scored 77 goals and conceded 26, this term.

Real Madrid are unbeaten in 17 consecutive league games…but runs can’t last forever, and this is as good a time as any for it to stop.

Prediction: Barcelona win 3-1 available at 25/1 with Coral.
