Updated odds for the 2017 Kentucky Derby open this weekend in the fourth and final futures pool. Bet strategy and updated prices here.

The fourth and final pool for 2017 Kentucky Derby Future Wagers opens its customary three-day run on Friday, March 31 at noon Eastern—hours before two key prep races the Florida Derby (G1) and Louisiana Derby (G2). A pair of unbeatens lead the pack at betting odds of +600 on the morning line: Whitham Thoroughbreds’ McCraken and Peacock Racing Stables’ Gunnevera. “The Field” interest closed as the favorite in the previous 2017 pools.

Third choice, at +1000 odds, is shared by Gotham Stakes (G3) winner and newcomer to the pool J Boys Echo, Tampa Bay Derby (G2) winner Tapwrit, undefeated Southwest (G3) victor One Liner and the “All Others” contingent. There are seven contenders listed at +5000 odds for those searching a long shot. Below are morning lines for 2017 Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4 as published by Churchill Downs:

Wagering Strategy

Look ahead to two races when using the final futures pool: this weekend’s Florida Derby and the Santa Anita Derby (G1) on April 8. Since 1990, half (13) of the Kentucky Derby winners have crossed the finish line first in these two important preps. Last year, Nyquist closed at +300 odds in the final futures pool following his romp at Gulfstream. He went on to win the Derby at a 2-to-1 price. Most all others in the pool, if they reach the starting gate on the first Saturday of May, will go off at odds similar, but typically longer, than listed in the pool.

McCraken is planning on running in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) on April 8. A win at Keeneland, while undefeated, would easily make him a Derby favorite. Pool 4 co-favorite Gunnevera is slated to run in the Florida Derby, and will likely go off the chalk. Futures bet on each may be good hedge material for later. If either wins their prep, expect +300 odds come Derby day. Santa Anita may present the best scenario for a price. Nearly 13 three-year-olds are in the mix for the Grade 1 race, with trainer Doug O’Neill expected to field upwards of four runners. Iliad, +1000 odds in Pool 4, will likely go off the favorite. Others pointing toward the race include Gormley (+2000), Battle of Midway (+5000), and the Bob Baffert-trained Reach the World (+5000).
