One of the biggest Kentucky Derby prep races will take place this weekend when unbeaten 3-year-old colt McCraken faces Tapwrit and others in the $1 million Blue Grass Stakes. With Tapwrit at current 10/1 odds to win the the Run for the Roses in a month, is now the smatest time to get behind the gray colt?

McCraken Still Futures Book Kentucky Derby Favorite

On Saturday, May 6, we’ll witness the 143rd running of the Kentucky Derby (G1) from historic Churchill Downs in Louisville (NBC, 6:46 p.m. ET), so what better time than now to take a look at the updated futures odds from offshore sportsbook BetOnline for the 1¼-mile race between the world’s best 3-year-old Thoroughbreds and the glamorous first leg of Horse Racing’s Triple Crown?

Son of Ghostzapper, McCraken (+550 to win Kentucky Derby, BetOnline) is still the race’s favorite with the Ian Wilkes-trained colt setting a new track record at the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 11. Coming off an injury, McCraken, jockeyed by American Brian Hernandez Jr., is 4-0 lifetime after winning three consecutive races at Churchill Downs last year, including the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club, and will face Pulpit Stakes and Tampa Bay Derby winner Taprwrit (10/1, BetOnline) in the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington this Saturday (NBCSN, 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT).

Is Tapwrit Worth Futures Book Consideration?

Trained by Todd Pletcher and jockeyed by Jose Ortiz, Tapwrit, who finished second to unbeaten McCraken in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, will get his chance for revenge on Saturday afternoon against McCraken (7/5 morning line favorite) in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Part-owner Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbreds likes the imoressive gray colt Tapwrit’s (5/2) evolution, saying, “With a little bit more aggressive approach, this horse just began to transform before everyone’s eyes.”

So with McCraken coming off an injury, this AP Indy progeny is in prime position to make some noise, and the 10/1 Kentucky Derby Futures odds will plummet if he should defeat McCraken. Derby hopefuls J Boys Echo (4/1), son of Horse of the Year Mineshaft, Practical Joke (7/2) and Wild Shot (15/1) are all also entered in the 7-horse field for this telling 9-furlong dirt race.
