Huge Saturday Almost Here For Some Kentucky Derby Hopefuls with Three Key Prep Races On Tap

One of the biggest days for Kentucky Derby Prep races is coming up with the Gotham Stakes (G3) from Aqueduct Racetrack, the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) from Tampa Bay Downs and the San Felipe Stakes (G2) from Santa Anita Park all set to be held this coming Saturday, March 10. Each race is worth 85 Kentucky Derby points—50 to the winner and 20, 10 and 5 for the 2nd- 3rd- and 4th-place finishers—as the 144th Run For The Roses at Churchill Downs in Louisville now sits just 8 weeks away on the calendar. Before these 3-year-olds run this weekend and clear up the picture a little as to who may qualify and chose to race in the prestigious G1 race and first leg of Horse Racing’s Triple Crown from Churchill Downs, let’s take a look at the latest Kentucky Derby Futures Book odds from and then offer up mini-previews

Promises Fulfilled (15/1 to win Kentucky Derby, won the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) from Gulfstream Park last weekend (Saturday, March 3), finishing ahead of 2nd-place finisher Strike Power (6.40, $3.60) and third-place Good Magic ($2.20) and paid $38.40 to Win ($12.80 Show, $4.60 Place), quickly thrusting the 3-year-old Colt (3 Wins, 1 Show in 4 races) onto the Futures oddsboard at and into the conversation in The Run For The Roses.

2018 Kentucky Derby Winner Futures Pick: Solomini +1550

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Preview: Tampa Bay Derby

The $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2, 1 1/16 miles) will see Kentucky Derby hopefuls including thoroughbreds Flameaway, Untamed Domain, Mischief and Quip, among others, competing on the Dirt track. But Futures Book bettors best beware here as only two Kentucky Derby winners, Street Sense (2007) and Super Saver (2010), have ever emerged from the Tampa Bay Derby (Race 11). Flameaway (10 points) won the Sam F. Davis Stakes—the track’s Tampa Bay Derby Prep race—in February, and will qualify for The Run For The Roses should he Win here this coming weekend and earn the 50 points.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Preview: Gotham Stakes

The $300,000 Gotham Stakes (G3, 1 1/16 miles) from Aqueduct Racetrack in New York City (South Ozone Park, Queens ??)—where Snow is falling at the minute—seems to have more legitimate Derby contenders in its field with Free Drop Billy (28/1 to win Kentucky Derby), Firenze Fire (3/1 to win Gotham Stakes) and Enticed (3/1 Favorite to win Gotham Stakes), and with a Win and the 50 points in the Gotham Stakes (Race 10), Free Drop Billy (14 points) would qualify for the Kentucky Derby while Firenze Fire (24 points) would make it to Churchill Downs on that first Saturday in May with a Place or Show result.

Maybe the 3-year-old that needs a nice result the most? Enticed (13 points) who had a disappointing debut in 2018, finishing 4th in the Holy Bull Stakes, 14 lengths off the winner. The one-turn Gotham Stakes (5:42 pm ET/2:42 pm PT Post) and San Felipe Stakes will be part of a 2½-hour broadcast from the new series “FOX Sports Saturday At the Races” which will air from 4 pm to 6:30 pm EDT (1 pm to 3:30 PDT PT) on FS2.

Kentucky Derby Prep Race Preview: San Felipe Stakes

The $400,000 San Felipe Stakes (G2, 1? miles) from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California, will definitely be the jewel of the day (FS2). The race features a showdown between two of the biggest contenders on The Road To The Kentucky Derby in G1 winners Bolt d’Oro—the current Favorite in the Futures market— the undefeated Bob Baffert owned and Los Alamos Fututrity (by virtue of Solomini’s DQ) and Sham Stakes winner McKinzie with the potential San Felipe Stakes winner, should it be one of these two, the possible Futures and Kentucky Derby favorite from here on out, depending of course, on the results of the “Super Six” Derby Prep races—the Florida Derby (March 31), the Santa Anita Derby (April 7), the Arkansas Derby (April 14), the Louisiana Derby (March 24), the Blue Grass Stakes (April 7) and the Wood Memorial Stakes (April 7)—all worth 100 points to their winners, which have yet to be held.

The latest (March 5) Kentucky Derby Media Poll has McKinzie at #1, Bolt d’Oro at #2 and Holy Bull Stakes (G2) winner Audible (+925 to win Kentucky Derby, currently at #3. Three winners of the San Felipe Stakes have gone on to win the Kentucky Derby in the last 29 years: Sunday Silence (1989), Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) and California Chrome (2014). Bolt d’Oro (8/5 to win San Felipe Stakes) jockey Victor Espinoza took the horse through a half-mile work time of 46.40 on Thursday morning at Santa Anita in preparation for Saturday’s potential big showdown with McKinzie (2/1 to win San Felipe Stakes).
