The Hanwha Eagles started the new week of the KBO slate with a win in extra innings. Do we dare take the Hanwha Eagles to win again? Here are the best bets for Wednesday’s KBO slate.

LG Twins vs. Doosan Bears

Wednesday, July 8, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • LG: Casey Kelly (3-3 4.89 ERA)
  • Doosan: Park Jong-gi (1-1 3.79 ERA)

The Doosan Bears have clobbered the LG Twins dating back to last season and have won 21 of their last 23 games against the LG Twins. This game is a rivalry between two teams who play in the same ballpark. I wanted to see if the Doosan Bears can hit at home and in the first game of the series, the Bears totaled nine runs. They’re back.

The Bears will go up against Casey Kelly of the LG Twins. Kelly is 3-3 with a 4.89 ERA. One of his losses came against the Doosan Bears a couple of weeks ago. He went seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking one. Kelly looked solid in that game but still ended up taking the loss.

In his most recent two starts before that one, he’s allowed seven runs (six earned) in 12 innings pitched for the Twins against SK and KT. Kelly has now allowed a homer in six straight games and allowed two in his most recent outing against KT.

His strikeout numbers have also decreased as of late. He’s struck out six batters in his last 12 innings pitched and walked four.

Last season, Kelly had an ERA of 2.55 and an FIP of 3.41. This season, it hasn’t been the same. He’s got a 4.89 ERA and a 4.72 FIP while allowing 1.1 homers per nine innings this season.

He’ll go up against a surprising pitcher in Park Jong-gi. Jong-gi hadn’t pitched for Doosan since 2015 but has been a solid starter for Doosan this season. Through four games started, Jong-gi has an ERA of 3.79 and an FIP of 3.67. Jong-gi struggled in his last outing against Kiwoom where he allowed three runs in three innings on seven hits.

He’s faced LG once this season and had his best outing. He went six innings on 83 pitches and limited the Twins to no runs on four hits while striking out three and walking none.

Jong-gi won’t go deep in this game but if he can give the Bears five quality innings against Casey Kelly, the Bears will have a chance to win this game as small favorites.

The LG Twins are struggling against the Doosan Bears throughout the last two seasons. There’s a legitimate edge for the Doosan Bears whenever they go up against the LG Twins. Casey Kelly allowing homers at a ridiculous rate scares me against this Doosan offense, even though the park is big.

Give me Doosan.

KT Wiz vs. Kia Tigers

Wednesday, July 8, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • KT: Odrisamer Despaigne (4-4 4.32 ERA)
  • Kia: Lee Min-woo (4-2 4.70 ERA)

The KT Wiz came alive offensively in their first game against the Kia Tigers on the road. The same might be in store for Wednesday’s match-up.

Lee Min-woo will take the hill for the Kia Tigers. He’s 4-2 with a 4.70 ERA but one of those losses came against KT where he allowed eight runs (seven earned) in 3.1 innings of work. He allowed 11 hits (two homers) while striking out two and walking one. This was easily Min-woo’s worst game of the season and it came against KT.

Min-woo has an FIP of 4.49 and is walking 3.3 batters per nine innings while striking out 6.1 batters per nine innings. He’s coming off a quality start against Hanwha, allowing one run on 100 pitches in six innings. That run was a solo homer.

Odrisamer Despaigne will take the mound for the KT Wiz and he’s coming off a solid performance himself as well. Despaigne went seven innings against Kiwoom, allowing one run on six hits on 117 pitches. That run was a solo home run. He struck out seven and walked two on the night.

Despaigne has been up and down all season long but his last start was pretty convincing against a fierce Kiwoom offense, at the time. Like Casey Kelly, Despaigne has allowed a homer in five straight contests which is definitely scary but he has limited hits to just six in his last five starts.

Despaigne struck out 12 and walked four in his last two starts which is also showing some progression.

Despaigne faced the Kia Tigers on May 27. He went eight innings, 112 pitches and didn’t allow a single run on four hits. In that game, he struck out seven and walked three, and most importantly, he got the win.

Look for KT to exploit Min-woo again. I like KT to win this game but you can also double dip and look at KT’s team total and hit the over.

Lotte Giants vs. Hanwha Eagles

Wednesday, July 8, 2020 – 5:30am EST

Probable Pitchers Per MyKBO Website:

  • Lotte: Dan Straily (1-2 2.53 ERA)
  • Hanwha: Warwick Saupold (5-5 4:00 ERA)

The Hanwha Eagles surprised the Lotte Giants and won a game in extra innings after blowing a safe lead. Can the Eagles make it two in a row against the Giants?

Not so fast.

Dan Straily will take the mound for the Lotte Giants. He’s got a 2.53 ERA with a 3.07 FIP. He’s been tremendous striking out 9.4 batters per nine innings and walking 2.4 batters per nine innings. Straily isn’t getting much run support when he’s on the mound and it might be hard for Lotte to score with Warwick Saupold on the mound for the Hanwha Eagles.

Straily hasn’t won a game since May 10 against SK and actually has a loss against Hanwha earlier this season.

Since that loss, he’s been very good but has been allowing multiple runs late in games. The pressure is on Straily because the bats aren’t scoring.

Straily went just 4.2 innings and pitched 105 pitches against NC in his last start. He allowed five runs (two earned) while striking out six and walking none. Straily was worked by the NC Dinos lineup but it shouldn’t be the same against Hanwha.

Warwick Saupold has a 5-5 record along with a 4.00 ERA. Two of those losses have come against the Giants which is a team he’s struggled against.

Saupold allowed just two runs in seven innings in his first start against Lotte but allowed seven runs in five innings, along with 13 hits in his most recent outing against the Giants.

Saupold struck out four and walked none in that game but the 13 hits were eye-opening. He’s now allowed at least seven hits in his last seven starts. The Giants have struggled to hit on the road for most of the season but in their most recent series against the NC Dinos, they scored plenty. They also scored six runs in the first game of this series.

Saupold has an FIP of 3.66 but his batting average of balls in play is currently .347. He’s getting hit hard and the Hanwha defense isn’t exactly one of the better ones in the league.

The Lotte Giants should respond against the Hanwha Eagles after a brutal extra-innings defeat on Tuesday. The Giants have already seen Saupold twice and hit him very well the last time they saw him pitch.

Give me the Giants and you can also look at the team total for the Giants in this one.
