The boxing odds makers are not giving much of a chance to a fighter who boasts a 50-2-1 mark, ala Julio Chavez Jr., but this fight will prove who the true Mexican sensation truly is.

Quien es Mas Macho?

On May 6th the world will witness two of the best fighters on the planet determined to prove who in fact is the supreme alpha male at a catchweight of 164.5 pounds, which is a 10 pound step up in class for Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1 34 KO’s) but a mere four-pound drop for  Julio Chavez Jr. (50-2-1-1 NC, 32 KO’s). Size and strength will be a huge factor in this one as Chavez has fought as heavy as 178 pounds in the light heavyweight division but has been toiling recently in the super-middleweight class (168 pounds).

The conventional wisdom is that Chavez does not have the elusiveness and alacrity to get out of harm’s way when Canelo begins counterpunching with his rapid-fire combinations. Floyd Mayweather proved too quick and angular to take any real hits from Canelo on his way to handing Alvarez his only professional loss via a unanimous decision victory. Yet, Chavez is often overlooked as one of Mexico’s boxing treasures, standing in the shadows of both his father Julio Caesar Chavez and the man he will be fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend.

Legendary promoter Bob Arum had this to say to FightHub, "Well I'm only going to be excited on that fight if Julio continues working hard in the mountains outside of Mexico City. He's putting in tremendous amount of work - if he listens to [Nacho] Beristain and if he works hard I not only give him a chance but I favor him to win the fight.”

The boxing odds makers have installed as Alvarez as a -700 favorite which is a noticeable drop from the -900 numbers some offshore bookmakers were dealing when the fight was announced. There is indeed plenty of betting value with Chavez who will own a four-inch height and three-inch reach advantage. Chavez is predatory in the ring and will continue to stalk Canelo who will undoubtedly try to use that to his advantage, zapping Chavez when he sees his openings. But we believe Chavez is a complete boxer and one whose skill has been underestimated. Grab the big return on Chavez in your boxing picks for May 6th because those odds could continue to fall.
