Whether you consider it a sport or one of the Seven Deadly Sins, men and women contestants alike will eat a lot of hot dogs on July 4 for your pleasure, but likely not theirs.

Gentlemen and gentlewomen, prepare your stomachs, the annual ode to gluttony – Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest – is just around the corner.

On July Fourth, about 20 contestants each in the men’s and women’s contest will compete at Coney Island, N.Y., to see who can eat the most Nathan’s Famous hot dogs in 10 minutes. We don’t know how you would stack up, but we’d surely be in the running with, uh, 1.5, right?

Yeah, we’d fail miserably because we like our hot dogs with a little mustard and we’re not into consuming the dog and then dunking the bun in water and drinking it down – ugh.

But apparently that is the winning move to take the Mustard Belt in this more than 100-year-old contest.

At 5Dimes and Pinnacle, 11-time winner Joey Chestnut is the overwhelming favorite in the men’s competition, just as Miki Sudo, a 5-time winner, is favored.

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

.@LaurenKUSI squares off with Championship eater Miki Sudo in a donut eating competition ahead on #nationaldonutday

Miki Sudo will be will fend off all challengers Friday during Donut Day on the USS Midway.;/a> ;/a>
— KUSI News (@KUSINews) June 6, 2019
\n"}[/]

Last year Chestnut who has the nickname “Jaws,” chomped down a world record 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes with watery buns. His closest competitor was Carmen Cincotti who ate only 45. Forty-five?? Rookie.

Sudo chowed on 37 and second place winner, Michelle Lesco, at 28.

If you’re interested in nutritional facts, and why wouldn’t you be, there are 280 calories in a hot dog and bun. That mean Chestnut will likely consume nearly 21,000 calories in hot dogs in 10 minutes. Hmmm, wonder if hot dog calories are similar to “dog years?”

Seventy dogs have 1,2225 grams of fat, 61,250 grams of sodium, 1,470 grams of carbs and 630 grams of protein. We hope they have a coroner, er, medic standing by.

Competitive eating is a blossoming “sports’ category with more than 80 “sanctioned” events recognized by Major League Eating, the world body that oversees all professional eating contests. And no, we aren’t making that up. The group which has the sister organization, the International Federation of Competitive Eating, helps develop, publicize and execute “world-class eating events in all varieties of food disciplines.”

If you’re hungry for money, this is a growing industry with varying prize money.

World Hostess Donettes Eating Contest: $4,000 first place, 257 in 6 mins; winner Joey Chestnut

Armour Vienna Sausage Eating World Championship: $3,500 first place; 8.31 pounds in 10 mins; winner Sonya Thomas

Acme Oyster Eating World Championship: $1,000 first place; 40 dozen in 8 mins; winner Darron Breeden

West Virginia Three Rivers Festival Pepperoni Role Eating World Championship: $5,000 total purse; 43 in 10 mins; winner Joey Chestnut

Hooters World Wing Eating Championship: $5,000 first place; 250 wings in 10 mins; winner Geoffrey Esper (2017)

Owensboro International Bar-B-Q Festival World Mutton Sandwich-Eating Championship: $4,000 total purse; 52 4 oz sandwichs in 10 mins; winner Joey Chestnut

Chestnut eats a lot in a year.
