"American Idol" names a winner of this season's crown the same night "GOT" finally puts someone in the Iron Throne. We're hopeful the "Idol" contest will end without bloodshed.

Royalty will be crowned on Sunday night, and no, we’re not talking about who will end up sitting on the Iron Throne on “Game of Thrones.”

The new “American Idol” will ascend to reign over pop stardom, though the fight could be just as contentious, minus beheadings and sword fights.

But then again, it will be a head-to-head ratings battle between ABC and HBO, so “Idol” could go all King’s Landing with Katy Perry dressed as Daenerys riding an inflatable dragon. Laugh, but I wouldn’t put it past the “Idol” judge.

Alejandro Aranda, Madison VanDenBurg and Laine Hardy emerged from last week’s contest, impressing judges and audiences on a night that featured the Elton John songbook and contestant dedications.

Left out of the final fray by elimination, Wade Cota (who frankly should have been gone weeks ago) and Laci Kaye Booth, a woman with a unique style that would do well in a coffee house or cabaret but probably wouldn’t fill an arena. (Meow!)

[/]{"component": "embedHTML", "code": "

We are so sad to see @WadeCota and @lacikayebooth go, but there is no question that they are stars!! 🌟🌟#AmericanIdol pic.twitter.com/BsGPEbuXmC
— American Idol (@AmericanIdol) May 13, 2019
\n\n"}[/]

BetOnline has it as a practical dead heat. Time will tell.

Aranda is the frontrunner by a note and continued to impress with this deeply felt interpretations of covers and his personal compositions. He sang Elton’s “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word” while playing a piano showing his versatility and an original called “Blesser,” which again showcased his ability to pair words with melody. Aranda is a perplexing musical Rubik’s Cube of talent that, when it comes together, is nearly flawless. Will America vote for his unmatched artistry?

VanDenBurg chose Elton’s “Your Song,” and it might have resonated more if she had also shown her piano prowess. We didn’t quite get Perry’s “catsup and mustard” comment, but that song had potential to spark tears and didn’t. She did make a mark, however, with Bob Dylan’s “Make Your Feel My Love,” making it her own rather than an Adele knockoff. Could she take the win on Sunday? Of course she can.

Hardy, by far, is the perfect combination of what “Idol” is all about. Talent, charming, handsome – the one all the grandmothers and pre-teens want to win. We’re not sure his performance of Elton’s “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” was as impressive as his silver suit and those pricey shoes, but it may not matter. His pick of “Hey Jude” by the Beatles was a crowd pleaser and prompted judge Luke Bryan to say he looked “like a whole snack.” Uh, OK.

According to BetOnline it is really too close to really call.

Winner of American Idol Season 17?

Alejandro Aranda +100

Madison VanDenBurg +200

Laine Hardy +250

This is what is known as a “Sophie’s Choice” … you want them all to win, yet only one can. But in this contest the also rans can always do much better than the actual winner – uh, Adam Lambert, (who will be on the finale performing “Bohemian Rhapsody, BTW) who came in second to Kris Allen. Remember him? Yeah, we don’t much either.

On sheer talent, the winner should be Alejandro Aranda – but good money should be on the granny vote with Laine Hardy sitting on the “Idol” throne.
