Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is the site of this year’s Breeders’ Cup in early November, but Saturday all the horse betting action at that storied West Coast track will be focused on the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic as a “Win and You’re In” event for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The No. 1 ranked horse in the nation is expected to highlight the field for Saturday’s main event, the TVG Pacific Classic, but there are a couple of legitimate contenders who could give him a run for his money around the dirt track at Del Mar. Based on the list of probables for this race, I have come up with the three horses I like the best in a trifecta bet.
2017 TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar
The Pacific Classic is a Grade 1 stakes race for 3-year-old thoroughbreds and up with a total prize purse of $1 million. It will be contested on the dirt track at Del Mar over a distance of 1¼ miles.
The field for Saturday’s main event at Del Mar has been set with eight entries confirmed; however, according to the posted morning line odds this should be a three-horse race. Of the three, I am going with trainer John Sadler’s Accelerate as my top choice to win at 3/1 betting odds. These are the longest odds of the three, but I was extremely impressed with this 4-year old colt’s victory in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on July 22 at a distance of 1 1/16 miles. I also like the fact that jockey Victor Espinoza is slated to get the ride in this race
Going back to his 3-year-old campaign, this sire of Lookin At Lucky has never finished out of the money in 10 events, including a third-place run in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Add in the fact that he has never lost a race at Del Mar in three starts, and there is quite a bit of value in these odds.
I would have to go with Arrogate as my second choice in this race. This 4-year-old colt comes into this race as an even-money 1/1 favorite to win and he has some lofty credentials as the No. 1 ranked horse by Horse Racing Nation. His 9.35 rating is also the best in Saturday’s field, but I am still more focused on his fourth-place finish in the San Diego Handicap last month. You know that famed trainer Bob Baffert is going to have him ready for this race and he is in good hands with jockey Mike Smith getting the ride, but I actually question this horse’s psyche following that disappointing run after winning his previous seven events.
You know that this pedigree of Unbridled’s Song is going to be right in the mix with past victories in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Pegasus World Cup on his racing resume, but I still think he gets edged out at the wire.
Baffert’s Collected is another one of the top favorites to win this year’s Pacific Classic at 5/2 odds on the morning line. This 4-year-old Kentucky-bred colt is coming off a victory in the Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes at Santa Anita Park on June 24 over a distance of 1 1/16 miles. That was his third straight win this season starting with the ungraded Santana Mile at that same park back in early April. Look for jockey Martin Garcia to be up Saturday.
This son of City Zip is unranked by HRN with a rating of 7.47, but he belongs in the top three of this race. He has already proven that he can run with the likes of Arrogate and Accelerate, so if you do go with my trifecta play make sure it is boxed.Talk Horse Racing Betting In Our Forum
