Longshot Latrobe captured the Irish Derby, Wonder Gadot won the Queen’s Plate in Toronto, and some East Coast tracks in the U.S. canceled their cards because of a heat wave.

Brothers Lead Latrobe To Irish Derby Win

Twenty-to-one longshot Latrobe won the Irish Derby 2018 (G1) at The Curragh in County Kildare, Ireland on Saturday (2:32.62) with 19-year-old jockey Donnacha O’Brien onboard as trainer (and older brother) Joseph O’Brien defeated 2nd-place finisher Rostropovich (30/1) and 3rd-place finisher and heavy race favorite Saxon Warrior (4/5), both horses trained by their famous father Aidan O’Brien.

It was the first win together for the brothers and the first classic win as a trainer for Joseph, who won the Irish Derby in 2012 and 2014 as a jockey in the respective saddles of Camelot — the sire of Latrobe, owned by Lloyd Williams — and Australia.

"It was incredible," proud papa Aidan O'Brien said of his sons' performances. "It's one of those special days. What can I say?”

Delano Roosevelt (18/1) came in 4th place, The Pentagon (25/1) was 5th while Old Persian (12/1) finished in 6th in the 12-horse, 1½-mile turf race between 3-year-old males. Latrobe, who stalked most of the race, now has two straight wins after 3 straight 2nd places in 5 career starts.

Wonder Gadot Captures First Leg of Canadian Triple Crown

Canada’s oldest thoroughbred race (1860), the $1 million Queen’s Plate at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, was won by Wonder Gadot (2:02.26) with John Velazquez in the irons on Saturday. Owned by Gary Barber and trained by Mark Casse, last year’s Sovereign Award-winning filly Wonder Gadot (3/1) finally got her first win this calendar year (1-4-2 in 7 starts in 2018, 4-4-3 12 career starts, $1,199,053 earnings) at the 1 1⁄4-mile Queen’s Plate at Woodbine on the synthetic Tapeta surface, winning the first jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown by 4¾ lengths. The Queen’s Plate has been won by fillies 37 times.

Finishing 2nd was Aheadbyacentury (15/1) with Cooler Mike (30/1) in 3rd with race chalk Telekinesis (5/2) finishing in 5th place. The next leg of the Canadian Triple Crown is the 1³/16-mile Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie Racetrack in Fort Erie, Ontario (July 24) with the one (full) lap, 1½-mile Breeders’ Stakes from the EP Taylor Turf Course at Woodbine (Aug. 18) the final lengthy test. Twelve horses have won the Canadian Triple Crown with Wando (2003) being the last to accomplish the rare feat.

Several East Coast Tracks Cancel Racing

Belmont Park (Sunday), Delaware Park (Monday) and Parx Racing (Monday) were all ordered closed by stewards due to the lingering heat wave on the East Coast. The NYRA reportedly made every effort to run the card at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, but temperatures made racing unsuitable and the day’s featured stakes race — the $100,000 Saginaw — for New York-bred 4-year-olds will run at a later date with racing set to resume Wednesday (July 4) with first post at 1:30 p.m. ET.

On Sunday, Delaware Park Racetrack in Stanton scrapped its card for Monday upon recommendation of the Chief Commission Veterinarian of the DTRC with more heat and stifling humidity forecast in the region with the NWS forecasting highs Monday in the high 90s with a heat index nearing a dangerous 105°.
