Hellas Verona defying odds

Hellas Verona are tipped at the advantage for their home affair against Torino, albeit on the short side of even money at +130 or thereabouts depending on your choice sportsbook.

Hellas Verona are proving to be the surprise package of Serie A betting this season. Finishing runners-up last season in Serie B, the promoted side burst onto the top-flight scene with unexpected verve and swagger, running away with the opportunity and punching above their perceived weight class. Case and point, Serie B winners Sassuolo are struggling in top flight, currently mired in the relegation quagmire, in 19th place.

Verona, the stirring backdrop for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is enjoying a newfangled love affair with Italy’s top flight and possibly even European second-tier competition next season. Currently, sat sixth in the league, the Gialloblu boast an 11-3-9 mark and 36 points, which puts them level on points with Inter Milan (9-9-5).

If Verona beat Torino at the weekend and, at the same time, Inter Milan fall to Fiorentina (as expected in soccer betting circles), Verona would climb up to the dizzying height of fifth in the table – a heady though indeed for the promoted side. Then again, they could just as easily slip down the table on the back of a defeat to Torino.

Torino are just three points back of Verona in the table, in eighth place with an 8-8-7 mark. The premium on the win just as great as it is for their hosts on Monday with the potential for ascent beckoning. However, in order to accomplish the feat, Torino would have to both overcome their struggles on the road this season, where they are only 3-4-4 to date, as well as transcend Verona’s home form that is quite an impeccable 8-1-3, highlighted by a seven-game winning streak to start the season.

Easier said than done when only three teams have managed to deny Verona points at home, including Roma, Napoli and Chievo – the latter of which the only deviation on form as Verona have fared rather well against middle and lesser opposition this season – and when league leading Juventus failed to beat Verona, instead settling on a 2-2 draw. A match that actually saw Verona storm back in the second half with two unanswered goals to force the draw on Juventus.

Since the 1-0 defeat to Chievo it would appear Verona’s home form suffered a bit of a dip, slipping to a 2-1-2 mark. But, given the quality of the opposition – four top ten teams including Lazio (a side they beat 4-1 mind) – you can safely chalk that run of form to a difficult schedule, not to mention be suitably impressed by their ability to collect seven out of a potential 15 points to boot.

Torino, tipped at +210 to mastermind the upset at Bet365, are riding encouraging form ahead of this clash. They are 2-2-1 in their last five games both home and away, but three of the five teams are some of the league’s current bottom stragglers, such as Sassuolo, Bologna and Atalanta.

Their last five away games saw them achieve a 2-2-2 mark as well, a run of form that includes a 2-0 victory over Udinese and a 1-1 draw to AC Milan.

Verona vs. Torino match betting tips and picks:

Verona’s recent home form appears to have taken a bit of a nosedive while Torino’s road form seems to be on the up of late and the upshot of their opposing fortunes seems to be reflected in the soccer betting market with both teams on the short side of even money on the outright win. However, it’s quite obvious that their realities are a direct consequence of scheduling and not necessarily a reflection of bad and good form respectively. In fact, Verona’s ability to rise to the occasion, particularly against league leading Juventus is worth noting. Besides, it’s debatable whether there is any takeaway from Torino’s road account when it comes at the expense of some of the more inconsistent teams this season.

So what we have here are misleading soccer odds, odds that suggest there is value on both sides of the coin, which couldn’t be further from the truth in our opinion. Fact is Verona have been rather solid at home for the most part this season and a return to that form is surely on the horizon now that the Scudetto candidates are come and gone, so we think at least. So in keeping with this vein of thought, we recommend Verona at +130 as the value soccer pick for this matchup.
