The opening match of the Gold Cup for Trinidad and Tobago is a match-up with Guatemala. William Hill's Lee Phelps is looking at the odds for goals this time around.

If you love goals, this may not be the match for you at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Guatemala have scored two in their last eight matches and Trinidad and Tobago have gone 450 minutes without scoring, although they did manage one in a behind-closed-doors match last week.

Trinidad and Tobago
Kenwyne Jones is their standout striker but partner Kevin Molino is missing and boss Stephen Hart has already described Molino as ‘irreplaceable’. Having seen Jones’ limitations in the Premier League it’s hard to see how the drought will end.

T and T have lost to Jordan, Curacao and Panama in the last three months, so keep this in mind when looking at the soccer odds; besides they are also without the services of first teamers Hughtun Hector, Carlyle Mitchell, Seon Power and Robert Primus. Add to that complaints from the boss about the lack of preparation and support from the country’s national association and it doesn’t look great.

Pappa and Carlos Ruiz were part of an international boycott late in 2014, but they are both back in the fold now and they are badly needed to add to the goal tally.

They warmed up for this tournament with back-to-back World Cup qualifier clean sheets against 126th ranked Bermuda.

The other positive, especially faced with Trinidad and Tobago’s off-the-field issues, is consistency and familiarity amongst the Guatemala squad. Ten play for Communicaciones club back home, including the whole midfield.

Soccer picks
You have to go under 2.5 goals here, but at 1.44 (4/9) it’s a little short for me to play. If you really want a goals bet, I’d take the under 1.5 at 2.5 (6/4). On the outrights, I could be tempted by a one goal victory for Guatemala, but overall the draw and the nil at 7.0 (6/1) are mysoccer picks.
