Free UFC 204 Picks – Dan Henderson vs Michael Bisping

UFC contender Michael Bisping

Sunday, October 2, 2016 9:21 PM GMT

Newly crowned middleweight champ Michael Bisping will make his first title defense against the 46-year-old MMA veteran Dan Henderson. Let’s check out what the UFC odds makers are dealing on this title tilt.

Dan Henderson (32-14, 16 KO’s, 2 Subs) vs. Michael Bisping (29-7, 16 KO’s, 4 Subs)

These two UFC veterans met seven years ago, which resulted in a 2nd round starching of Bisping and a 2009 Knockout of the Year for Dan Henderson. But that was when Henderson was just a mere 39-years-old and became the first man ever to KO Bisping. Obviously, Henderson was past his elite prime even then but now he is truly in the twilight of his UFC career. Nevertheless, Henderson is a physical marvel in that he is still able to compete at the apex of the sport.

Michael Bisping has always been more than a gate keeper at the UFC middleweight division but never a champion…until now. His stunning first-round KO of former champion Luke Rockhold in June simply proved that on any given night, anything can happen. But Bisping’s reign won’t be long which doesn’t mean he will lose to Henderson at UFC 204. It simply means his performances and history indicate he is far more defined as a tough-as-nails top 10 contender rather than the alpha male of the 185 pound division.

Yet, The Count’s first title defense has been cunningly contrived by Dana White to give the legendary Dan Henderson one last shot at glory. It also allows Bisping an opportunity to continue his reign for at least one more fight as he is pitted against a fighter who is well past his expiration date. This is also a fight that Bisping, installed as a better than -200 favorites by the UFC odds makers, has wanted since the moment he was starched by Henderson which was preluded by some serious bad blood between the two. It is a match that really shouldn’t have been made but one that had to happen.

Bisping will avenge his loss because he is now the better technical fighter and has actually gotten smarter as he has grown older. The champion certainly has always had knockout power but employed a stand-and-trade strategy that hasn’t worked out very well against the best in the world. Dan Henderson would be an easy to include in our UFC betting picks had this fight taken place a dozen years ago or even seven years ago – oh, right that happened – but Hendo is fading fast and Bisping will retire him in front of a rabid fan base thirsty to cheer on their hometown champ in merry old England.
