The biggest tournament on ATP Tour this week will be played in Rotterdam with 500 points for the champion. Find out our top tennis picks for this event and the players you should add.
Despite winning the ATP Montpellier title, Richard Gasquet was far from impressive. However, the French had an extremely easy tournament, facing only one top 50 player on that event – the world no.48, Marcos Baghdatis. Richard will compete on this event for the 5th time in his career, with his best result recorded in 2012 when he reached the quarterfinals. Gasquet is known for his passive game style and he should face some very aggressive baseline players on the first rounds such as Jeremy Chardy, Teymuraz Gabashvili and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. If Richard manages to survive these first tough rounds, he might face at the semifinals Roberto Bautista Agut, a player who beat him in two of their three previous meetings. Adding to this, Gasquet still seems to be struggling with some back issues and won’t be easy for him to play back-to-back tournaments on his first events in 2016. With this in mind, is hard to find value on Gasquet to win the tournament at 6.50 on bet365 and we suggest to avoid betting on him.
It hasn’t been a good start of season for the 2014 ATP Rotterdam runner-up, Marin Cilic, with the Croatian winning only 3 of the 6 matches he played in 2016. After two poor tournaments in Australian soil, the world no.13 lost in his opening match at Montpellier against Alexander Zverev. Cilic has struggled to perform at a consistent level from the baseline and he has an extremely tough draw in Rotterdam. The Croatian starts his campaign against Denis Istomin and after that first round match; he might face very dangerous players such as Gilles Muller, Andreas Seppi, Philipp Kohlschreiber or Benoit Paire. If Marin manages to survive the first rounds, he should face Gilles Simon at the semifinals, an opponent he only defeated once in seven previous matches. Due to Cilic’s lack of form and the tough players he might face, we suggest to avoid betting on him at 6.00 on bet365.
After a disappointing week at Montpellier, where Gilles Simon lost on his debut against Dustin Brown, the French will be looking for another good run in Rotterdam. Simon has a terrific career record on this event, reaching semifinals in his last two appearances. This season the draw is weaker than in previous years, with Simon having a great opportunity to go a step further. The French shouldn’t find much problems on his first match against the home player, Robin Haase. Simon might experience some problems in the next stage against Vasek Pospisil, but this is a good match-up for Simon with the French defeating Pospisil earlier this year at the Australian Open. On quarterfinals, Gilles can meet his fellow countryman Gael Monfils, but once again the match-up suits Simon, with a 6 – 1 lead on h2h. As we mentioned, Marin Cilic was far from impressive and Simon’s solid baseline game and counter punching skills might be too much for him. Having said that, Simon’s chances of reaching the final are quite good and for that reason, we advise to take his tennis odds at 8.50 on bet365.
Player to keep an eye on
It has been a terrific start of year for Roberto Bautista Agut, with the Spaniard winning his second season title last week at Sofia. Roberto loves to play on Indoor, where his consistent baseline game and counter punching skills are extremely effective. Agut has a good draw on this event, where he should face João Sousa, Lukas Rosol and David Goffin in the first rounds. After that and as we mentioned, a possible clash with Richard Gasquet might occur at the semifinals and Roberto has great chances of winning that too. Due to the good draw and the terrific level of tennis presented this year, there is clear value on adding Agut to your tennis picks on this event.
