Soccer betting goes midweek on us with a whole slew of European action in both top and second flight leagues. Join us as we preview FC Porto’s tie with Eintracht Frankfurt in UEFA Europa League this week and discuss the soccer odds on tap.
FC Porto hot favourites
FC Porto enter the R32 as one of several contenders for the title, tipped at +1600 to win outright at Bet365. FC Porto won the title in 2010-2011 and by extension have a legitimate stake in the competition. That said with a field stacked deep in quality and talent they’ll have all to do to replicate that memorable run. Amongst the top three sportsbook contenders: Juventus at +333 soccer odds lead the charge followed by Tottenham at +700 and Napoli at +900.
FC Porto entered the Europe’s second flight competition after finishing third in Group G in Champions League, behind Atletico Madrid and Zenit St. Petersburg. They begin the knockout stages against Eintracht Frankfurt, also former UEFA Cup winners.
Eintracht Frankfurt emerged through the rounds of second-flight competition as Group F winners with a solid 5-0-1 record, highlighted by 13 goals scored and just four conceded. A solid European account, which should give the Bundesliga side good reason to be optimistic even if sportsbooks aren’t quite so convinced.
Well, that’s putting it mildly. Across the board, sportsbooks are utterly unconvinced where the German side is concerned. They list Eintracht Frankurt at the huge disadvantage for the first leg at Estádio do Dragão, tipping the Eagles at +750 to win outright and tipping the draw at +320.
The disadvantage extends even further in periphery markets. The double result for instances sees Eintracht Frankfurt to win both halves listed at +1200 while a draw-Eintracht Frankfurt win and vice versa is listed at +1800 at Bet365. The long shot bet in this market is Eintracht Frankfurt to win the first half and FC Porto to win the second half, which is trading at +2000.
Porto meanwhile are listed at the firm advantage at -225 soccer odds to win the first leg on their stomping grounds. Where periphery sports betting markets are concerned, the favouritism is conspicuous. They are tipped at +110 to win both halves at Bet365 while a draw-FC Porto win result is listed at attractive +275. FC Porto to win the first half but succumb to a draw in the second half is listed at +1800 while the draw emerging in both halves is listed at +550.

FC Porto vs. Eintracht Frankfurt match betting tips and picks.
It’s evident that odds makers are heavily backing FC Porto to win outright in the first leg but is this market cast warranted?
Home advantage naturally plays a large part in such market evaluations and the fact that they are undefeated at home in domestic action with an 8-1-0 record to date in Primeira Liga lends value to their soccer odds. That said, FC Porto are winless in their last three continental matches at home with a 0-1-2 mark. They lost to Atletico Madrid and Zenit St. Petersburg at home while drawing 1-1 with Austria Wien.
In fact, their entire top-flight account reads a disappointing 1-2-3; their lone victory was a 1-0 victory in Vienna to open their competition. When taking into consideration this important facet of their failed top-flight campaign and, more specifically, the underlying fact that they failed to capitalise on a rather evenly matched group, it would appear odds makers are slightly overrating FC Porto at Eintracht Frankfurt’s expense.
Eintracht Frankfurt have been largely inconsistent in Bundesliga action, a fact that probably has cost them any credibility for this competition. They are sat 12th in the table with a 5-6-10 mark and 21 points, which puts them three points clear of relegation ahead of Bundesliga week 22 betting. But it’s funny how domestic form can be entirely different to European form.
In Europe, Eintracht Frankfurt have been nigh perfect with five victories (all clean sheets) and just one defeat. Granted, the calibre of the competition doesn’t compare to that in top-flight but winning form can prove to be a deciding factor, which they have in abundance compared to FC Porto.
Soccer Betting Verdict
The way sportsbooks cast this matchup suggests they believe it’s a new lease on life for FC Porto in Europe. If you agree, then at -225 to win outright FC Porto is a good soccer pick for you. However, we’re not so sure Eintracht Frankfurt should be written off so hastily. As unlikely as the upset seems (or even the draw result) we’re not yet convinced Porto’s European woes are behind them and as such we recommend going against the grain with your soccer picks and taking a chance on Eintracht Frankfurt at +750 for the win or (for the more conservative bettor) the draw at +320 at Bet365.
Soccer Picks: Draw at +320
