Sportsbooks send Newcastle United into their tilt with West Bromwich Albion only as the notional favourites, listed at +100 at Bet365. The visitors meanwhile are tipped at the disadvantage, as high as +275 to win outright while the draw is being offered just a smidgen below their odds at +250.
When a sports betting market is uncertain as this one clearly is – well, as far as the favourites go – should sports bettors pile onto Newcastle United or take a chance on the underdogs?
Is there value on the underdogs?
West Bromwich Albion are after an exciting tilt with Aston Villa, a heated West Midlands derby that ended on a 2-2 draw. Truth be told, West Brom should have won that match and were in fact leading 2-0 going into halftime. The second half however was a different story altogether. The Villans turned the table on them, stepped up the tempo and scored two unanswered goals to force the draw.
Of course, the home win would have been the desired result. But the Baggies must be happy enough (lucky maybe?) to take a point from a clash that very nearly got away from them. But because the draw to Aston Villa marks the second game in a row the Baggies should have won, it could be a concerning trend sports bettors will want to give pause for thought.
The Baggies very nearly pulled off the big upset against Chelsea but for an unlucky/careless penalty late in the game that allowed Oscar to lift the Blues to a 2-2 draw and a share in the spoils. Then they failed to hang on to a lead against their archrivals Aston Villa. So one has to wonder whether back-to-back missed opportunities will start to bear down on their confidence.
Though they did manage to extend their unbeaten form in Premier League to three straight games, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to prevent a slide out of the Top 10. Swansea City on the back of a 2-1 win over Fulham leapfrogged into 10th place from 13th and forced the Baggies out of the table’s better half.
Newcastle United the notional favourites
Since losing 2-1 to Sunderland, Newcastle United have impressed in sports betting circles, bagging wins against some of the Premier League’s darlings against all the odds. And it’s not in the act of winning that they’ve impressed but also in the manner in which they did it, with clean sheets.
A 2-0 win over Chelsea followed by a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on the road have improved their stock all around and raised a few eyebrows. Although they weren’t as perfect against Norwich City in the last lap, they still managed to take a 2-1 victory to extend their inspiring form to three wins in a row.
The unassuming Magpies are now up to eighth in the table, two points behind fourth-placed Man City in fourth place – that’s a heady thought indeed. Puts a whole added dimension to the three points on offer against West Brom Albion, doesn’t it.
Soccer Betting Verdict:
This should be a very interesting clash in every respect. Sportsbooks are right to not take a one-sided stance on this matchup because there is value on both sides of the coin. Newcastle United, with home advantage, have a great opportunity to advance their cause towards the league’s top five. At the same time, West Bromwich Albion cannot be underestimated. They’ve beaten Man U at the Old Trafford this season already, held Arsenal to a draw and very nearly beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Staring down big clubs is no mean feat so they have it in them to stare down Newcastle United successfully.
That being said current form tips the scale towards Newcastle United; they’ve been the more convincing and consistent of the pair in recent weeks and thus we recommend Newcastle United at +100 to win outright. West Brom though should give them a run for their money and that’s why our value soccer pick is the Over 2.5 at -125.
