Everybody knows Manchester United have a new manager but it’s probably the sweetest opportunities in the wide wide world of football, as in his first serious match in charge could net him a trophy. David Moyes takes Alex Ferguson's… Sorry David Moyes takes his team to face Wigan in the curtain opener that is the Community Shield.
Enough with the sly digs at Moyes…WHERE’S THE MOMEY MIKE?
Okay first things first and no surprises that this game is going to be all about Manchester United. The Red Devils are 9/2 with bet365 to win this one, and to win it within 90 min is 5/1. If you fancy Wigan, you should know that their odds go as high as 12/1 on them wining inside 90 minutes.
If you're feeling somewhat perverse and obtuse and you have to bet on the underdogs lifting the trophy, don’t bet on them doing it inside 90 minutes. Any Wigan victory is at 6/1, but why waste money with your soccer picks?
You might think that I've been an unduly kind to Manchester United but a quick look at the odds tells you the sportsbooks think will win this game Manchester United winning 2-0, 1-0, 3-0, 2-1 and 3-0 are all fancied ahead of an 1-1 draw (the most likely result to favour Wigan) We then see Manchester United winning 4-0 and 4-1, a 0-0 draw a 2-2 draw and a 5-0 United victory before the correct score odds favour a Wigan win. Wiggin’s first shout at the win according to the bookies is at 1-0 which runs as high as 35/1 with 2-1 at 25/1.
They are huge betting odds and anybody who remembers the manner in which Wigan won the FA Cup might be tempted to have a little bet on either of those scores but I just can't see it happening.
A quick local history which tells you all you really need to know about this game if a look at the odds didn't tell you already. In the last 5 meetings between the two sides Wigan Athletic only won one of them, in fact in all of the Premier League meetings between the two sides Wigan only won one. Many Wigan fan remember that day back in April 2012 when it took all three points at home off Manchester United with incredible 1-0 victory. However anybody who isn't quite as blinkered in the memory department will see in the two games after that Manchester United beat Wigan 4-0 both times and that Manchester United beat Wigan 5-0 and 4-0 in the previous encounters.Prediction: Manchester United win but we can get a consolation goal I'm backing 4-1 to the Red Devils at a big fat 16/1 with Ladbrokes.
