Free Soccer Picks: Copa America Betting Selections For Monday

Sunday, June 5, 2016 4:59 PM GMT

Group D action gets underway on Monday as the first round of Copa America group play wraps up. We bring you a discerning commentary of the day’s action complete with soccer picks.

Panama vs. Bolivia
Panama open their Copa America bid with a date against Bolivia. As an invitee to the special edition of the competition representing the CONCACAF they are amongst the long shots in outright betting, matched at whopping +20000 to triumph.

Panama come into the tournament on mixed form – they are 3-2-2 in their last seven fixtures across several competitions in 2016. What might make Panama a dangerous floater in this section is the fact that they finished third in last year’s CONCACAF Gold Cup after beating USA on penalties and were semi-finalists in the two previous instalments of the tournament.

Bolivia are amongst the weakest sides in the CONMEBOL according to current WC South America qualifying standings. They are sat ninth in the table of ten nations with a 1-0-5 mark and three points, underscored by a three-game losing streak to Paraguay, Colombia and Argentina.

Poor form does take the shine off Bolivia somewhat in this competition’s winner market, despite a solid account in last year’s Copa America where they finished second behind Chile in group play to move into the quarterfinals (l. to Peru). They too are matched as longshots in outright betting, in fact priced even larger, at +25000 with bet365 to triumph.

On paper, it does appear as if the playing field were level but match betting markets take a different view, a more pronounced take largely down to form. Panama are trading on a low of EVEN odds with several sports betting exchanges to win in 90 minutes and, at the same time, Bolivia are trading over +300 soccer odds in most cases. The draw is sandwiched in the middle of this range.

By all accounts, the marquee matchup in this section on Monday’s card is the clash between tournament favorites Argentina and defending champions Chile. Most of the attention is sure to be trained on that pair. But don’t let that take away from this matchup because the winner of this matchup could potential shake things up in Group D. The winner here could potentially make a run for the knockouts and that puts a huge premium on the win and ensuing three points. Both sides will be eager to win this match and while form certainly points to Panama, Bolivia will fancy their chances of repeating last year’s heroics. It’s a risky soccer pick to back Bolivia to the upset, but there is a certain appeal to going against the grain in this matchup. So for our money, we’re going with Bolivia at +356 with Pinnacle to win in 90 minutes but we’re not betting the farm on it, mind. For those cautious soccer bettors, the better option might be to back the draw no bet with Bolivia priced at +225 soccer odds or thereabouts depending on your choice sportsbook.

Argentina vs. Chile
It’s the reprisal of last year’s Copa America final when Argentina and Chile collide in the first round of Group D action. Chile clinched the coveted trophy against the soccer odds last year when they defeated tournament favorites Argentina on penalties. It marked the second straight loss by the Albiceleste in a pivotal final after losing to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

Once again, Argentina are the team to beat in Copa America. Auspiciously, they come into the tournament riding a four-match winning streak that includes three World Cup qualifying fixtures and a friendly. In WC South American standings they are third, a point ahead of fourth-placed Chile, and with a 3-2-1 mark highlighted by a five-match undefeated streak that includes a 2-1 win over Chile. The only loss coming to Ecuador in the campaign opener.

Chile, by contrast, started their WC qualifying campaign promisingly but they are a disappointing run of results and were beaten in both warm-up friendly fixtures in the lead up to Copa America, losing to Jamaica 2-1 and Mexico 1-0. La Roja also boast one solitary win in their last five fixtures – a win over Venezuela.

Given the contrasting form it’s no surprise Argentina enter this matchup as the firm favorites to win in 90 minutes, underscoring their credentials as the team to beat in outright winner markets. At most sportsbooks, Argentina are trading anywhere from -105 to -115 to get off to a strong start. Equally so it’s no surprise Chile are matched as the underdogs but with prices hovering over the +300 mark one wonders whether odds makers are putting too much stock into their recent spate of results. There’s a lot of quality on Chile’s squad that could switch on just in time for the proceedings. That and they’ll want to prove their win over Argentina in last year’s final was no fluke either, surely.

Obviously, it’s hard to look beyond an Argentina victory and with several sportsbooks offering Argentina on EVEN odds it’s too tempting to ignore. Heritage is offering an Argentina win at +103 soccer odds, so if you’re looking to back the Albiceleste to a winning start that’s the best line currently available.

Still, La Roja’s odds do smack disingenuous in Copa America betting markets. So much so they are just too tempting to ignore as well. Of course, this could be a carefully laid out trap by bookies to tempt more soccer bettors to back Chile for the upset, making it a risky game to handicap in more ways than one, but we’re biting and taking Chile to upset Argentina on our soccer picks. Maybe hedging our bets with a draw no bet on Chile at +225 as well. Fortune favors the brave, so they say.
