Southampton welcome Manchester United at St. Mary’s on Sunday, marking match day 6 of the Premier League. Here’s our preview complete with soccer free picks.

Southampton (1-3-1)
The Saints got off to a slow start with a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United followed by a 3-0 loss at home to Everton. Since round 2, however, they’ve gone undefeated in three straight games with two draws and a win. Crucially, they haven’t conceded a goal in any of those games – they held Watford and West Bromwich Albion to scoreless draws and beat Norwich City 3-0.

It’s a not exactly a surge in form. Nor did they face quality opposition in any of those games, the sort of teams that beating would raise an eyebrow or two. Nevertheless, it’s a noticeable string of positive enough results upon which Ronald Koemen’s side could revitalise their campaign in the coming weeks, and that’s nothing to sniff at.

Manchester United (3-1-1)
Manchester United are enjoying a bright start to their 2015 – or bright~ish might be more apt now after losing to PSV (road) in match day 1 of Champions League betting this week. The loss marked their second straight away loss across all competitions – (last road win was the sensational 4-0 win over Club Brugge in Champions League qualifying) – which has some soccer fans a touch concerned.

Manchester United opened their domestic campaign with a 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, a rather lacklustre account highlighted by a Spurs own goal, which gave the Red Devils all three precious points. In round 2, Man U edged Aston Villa 1-0 on the road –another stiff account in the bank.

Things started to unravel a bit in round 3 when Manchester United were forced to settle on a scoreless draw to Newcastle United at the Old Trafford, but they really came to a head when Man U lost 2-1 to Swansea City on the road, marking Louis Van Gaal’s second loss to the club as a Man U manager in as many seasons.

On match day 5, the Red Devils bounced back with a 3-1 account over Liverpool. It marked the first game of the season in which Man U scored more than a goal and it was the second game of the season in which the OVER 2.5 cashed.

Soccer Betting Tips and Picks
It’s a tight soccer betting line that the Premier League odds makers roll out for this game. Curiously, despite back-to-back losses on the road by Man U – losses to Swansea in Premier League and PSV in Europa – it’s rather surprising to have Man U favoured, albeit at +150 soccer odds. Southampton, meanwhile, are severely underrated at +210 soccer odds at home, which seems rather disingenuous considering the recently improved form underscored by solid defending. The draw is trading at +230 soccer odds.

It’s easy to understand why Man U have the slight edge on the soccer odds board, on account of their higher ranking in the Premier League  table and overall better form on the season. It’s hard to ignore their recent struggles on the road though. That makes them a risky play in our books at +150 soccer odds. As such, Southampton at +210 to win straight up or the draw at +230 soccer odds hold more appeal to us for our soccer picks. Consider the Saints have home edge for the game and St. Mary’s is going to be a tough place to conquer if the Saints are as defensively sound as they’ve been in previous games.
